1. Complete album with Fenriz commentary

Product Description

2CD Edition of the classic album - now on Peaceville. Isengard was a solo project set up by Fenriz of Darkthrone in the late 1980's which began more as a death metal project and evolved into a large mix of styles, incorporating elements of doom, rock, death, black metal and folk. 'Høstmørke', meaning Autumn Darkness, was the second Isengard album, (even though the debut, 'Vinterskugge' is a collection of sorts). It was released in 1995 and featured a continuation of Norwegian folk elements mixed with some doom, with all instruments once again performed by Fenriz himself, as well as the now-trademark vocal delivery. The latter part of the album also features a couple of black metal tracks which explore territory a bit more in line with Darkthrone, particularly the track 'Total Death'. Høstmørke is also notable for featuring a couple of small guest appearances from Aldrahn (Thorns, ex Dødheimsgard) and Vicotnik of Dødheimsgard. This new edition of 'Høstmørke' contains a special commentary disc conducted by Fenriz and reflecting on the recording process, as well as an insight into the time of the recording.

Although this Fenriz solo album is quite short, what little material it holds is very good. The first few tracks include a-capella folk singing as well as folk-viking-metal (think Fenriz and Satyr's "Storm" album meets Candlemass)which works surprisingly well. The final two tracks, "Thornspawn Chalice" and "Total Death", are pure black metal and would have raised the standard of Darkthrone's weak "Total Death" album considerably if they had been used.
This release features guest screams from Vicotnik/Fixit (Ved Buens Ende/DHG) and Aldrahn (DHG/Zyklon B) and is a must have item for Darkthrone fans if only for the last few songs - "Total Death" is particularly vicious!
All hail Fenriz - he is a god!

This is an excellant little gem of black metal. The norwegian folk elemants are interesting & at times amusing, I'm not sure that was the intention, but that is how they come across to me! The black metal though is superb, some great riffs to be had from a master of the genre. All in all it has a lot 'happier' feeling than most black metal without losing the darkness. It is an interesting slice of something familiar but slightly different to the norms of the black metal genre. The track 'Total Death' could easily of come off any Darkthrone release. Hail Fenriz.

If you like all things Nordic you cant go wrong. Fenriz is the riffmaster. Buy any and all things that he has crafted. Storm-Nordavind is one to look out for if you havent already heard it.

Folk black metal from Fenriz. 15 Sept. 2001
By Ingvar - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Brilliant and excellent album! Isengard is actually a solo project of Darkthrone's drummer Fenriz. This "Hostmorke" album is really a masterpiece of black metal art. Combining folk elements with raw cold metal, Fenriz created a wonderful concept of his Isengard.
First five songs are real Norse pagan songs. The last two are old Darkthrone ones, which Fenriz released on "Hostmorke". The are, too, great! "I Kamp Med Hvite Krist" is a great marching sound. Fenriz's vocals here are congenial, as in every song of this album. "Over De Syngende Ode Moer" is a long and slow, but fascinatingly enchanting song. It is better to be prformed in the cave. That's what I thought after hearing that track.
Vocals are clean and strong. I am fascinated by Fenriz's superb vocals. Guitars, basses and drums are real good. Production reminds somewhat a raw demo sound, but that's what Fenriz wanted "Hostmorke" to be. Raw and grim.
I recommend it as a true masterpiece.

Fenris puts out a masterpiece! 20 Jan. 2005

When I heard this album, I found a totally new, powerful sound, that clubbed me in the face with an inverted cross and told me whos boss. Aside from the 2 Darkthrone songs, the album features strong, Scandanivian riffs and brutal viking vocals, mixing together to form some of the best songs I've ever heard. This has been in my car for a good 3 months now, only taking a break for the other Isengard cd. BUY THIS NOW!!! and Vinterskugge too!
Excellent cd! 17 Dec. 2014

In my opinion, this is by far the BEST. It's all Fenriz and it's probably my all time fav. All of the tracks are well done and listening to this cd is like a taking in a big breath of fresh air. After playing this type of music, it's really hard to go back to the normal everyday music overplayed on the radio. The commentary version is an added bonus and educational to say the least (Fenriz 101 Basics). What else can be said...Buy it!!
