Amazon.co.uk Review

The inevitable sequel to one of the decade’s most intriguing and well-made horror films, Hostel Part II, as the title implies, picks up pretty much where the last film left off. And it doesn’t take too long for the sequel to find the same groove that earned its predecessor so much attention.

The setting is once again an underground club, where people bid for the right to torture residents at the hostel of the title. Hostel Part II, however, lets us see events from the other perspective too, as we meet the wealthy businessmen who are availing themselves of the club’s services. It’s a logical dynamic for the movie, and it does bring a fresh perspective to a film that does eventually settle down to a cavalcade of gore and shock.

As a director, Eli Roth has clearly improved since last time around, even if this time he too often succumbs to the temptation to show rather than imply, and Hostel Part II as a result feels a little less fresh and more uncomfortable than its predecessor. Yet it’s most certainly an unsettling piece of cinema, and one likely to find favour with Roth’s increasing fanbase.

A word of warning, though. Hostel Part II isn’t shy about pulling its punches, and it very much justifies its 18 certificate. It’s also a cut above many of its modern day contemporaries in the genre, even though it fails to measure up to part one. --Jon Foster

Synopsis

Presented by Quentin Tarantino (Hostel, Kill Bill, Vol. 1 & 2) and written and directed by Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever),  Hostel Part II is the shocking and gruesome sequel of the underground torture ring where rich businessmen pay to torture and murder their victims.   The second installment to this terrifying franchise centers around three young American women (Lauren German, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) (Bijou Phillips, Bully), and (Heather Matarazzo, Welcome to the Dollhouse) who are studying in Rome. They are lured into a hostel by a beautiful young woman who sells them in as the next victims of a murder-for-profit business.

Hostel: Part II does what Part I didn't: it actually concentrates on gore and horror. Where the first movie shows full frontal nudity for the majority of its run time, part two cuts most of that out and just gives gore fans what they want.

What's especially good is that it doesn't just start a completely different story without any mention of characters from the previous movie. It picks up right where the first film left off with Paxton, although it does swiftly finish off and we get introduced to the new characters within the first 10 minutes. Part II follows three female college students who enter a hostel in Slovakia and are effectively bought by external bidders to be tortured and killed, much like in Part I.

Hostel: Part II is essentially more of the same from Part I apart from this time, it's with women. It's gritty and creepy most of the time and because of the weak and vulnerable stereotype of women in film, you really find yourself being scared and anxious for the girls. Especially Lorna in her death scene. Ouch.

Considering this movie didn't make even close to as much as the first, it's a pretty enjoyable torture flick and the ending is far better. I would even dare to say that this is almost as good as the first. Definitely not for the squeamish though.

Fine Movie 24 Jun 2011

the story you either know already or you view the film yourself.
Some say Hostel 1 is better, others say hostel 2 is better, as usual, each person has her/his own opinion

it's uncut and one of the only full versions, in compare with the german "full" version, it contains one scene more, about 7 seconds, at the "bathtube -scene"

it's in my opinion as good as part 1.

I wasn't a fan of the first Hostel, but Eli Roth's follow up is a much better film. The film is better paced and the story has more depth as it shows both the killers and victims and the events leading up to their meeting in the factory.
The female victims are seen enticed into a short break at a Slovakian spa and the killers are seen as ordinary wealthy businessmen bidding in a online auction for their victim.
Though it is a little less gory and violent than the first film the killing seems far more potent as films improved character depth makes you more involved with both the killers and their victims.
Overall, if you liked the first Hostel film then this is a no-brainer and even if you didn't rate the first movie then this is well worth a look.
