'The Hostage' is a Second World War Story taken from the point of view of a German General, Friederich von Dexter, who receives hysterical orders from the Fuehrer, Adolf Hitler, in the dying days of the war. He must obey his orders or face the fatal Nazi punishment for military disobedience, but can he also save the lives of 10,000 ordinary German soldiers under his command?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, 20 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
I have been reading Forester's work since I was a child, and have always found his writing to be very exciting and thought provoking. This short story is very well written, there's a lot of tension and terse, pointed writing. Forester certainly knew how to express a character by their actions, and the General in this story is well demonstrated. It's a story that highlights the reality that not all combatants in a conflict (in this case WWII German) are evil / really bad guys - there are always more complex forces at work than the simplistic view of good vs. evil that have been the character of so many stories post-war. (Any war).
