This is definately a book to use for reference rather than sitting down and reading from cover to cover. It is laid out in sections covering roses, shrubs, climbing and wall plants, vines, fruit trees, soft fruit and trees. The introduction and glossary at the front cover all of the basis so that a gardening novice should be able to follow the pruning instructions. There are plenty of clear black, and green illustrations showing where to prune which look easy to follow except for the climbing and rambling roses illustrations which look quite messy - perhaps like the plants! The instructions are written in plain english with specific gardening terms only used where necessary. As each chapter is laid out in a similar way it is easy to skim through and find the area thet you want. Most common shrubs and trees are included in the appendix, which then points you to the relevant pages for pruning the specific plant. As the book is quite small and reletively inexpensive it is a book that you could take around the garden and use outside while pruning. As it is so compehensive it is likely to be the only book that you ever need on pruning.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best! 29 Mar 2013
Format:Spiral-bound|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the greatest, most useful, pruning book around. I have had one since about 1980 and it is constantly to hand. So - I have been ordering them for friends and family, too. A 'must-have' for anyone who gardens.

4.0 out of 5 stars straight forward and to the point 23 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is very straight forward with clear illustrations on how and when to complete pruning on most bush, shrubs, tree, roses etc. I think that it is easy to follow but it does rely on you knowing your plants in the first place! The pen and ink drawings are very easy to follow but are not detailed enough for you to identify plants, should you have an unknown specimen in your garden. The book arrived in very good time and was in very good condition. On the whole I am very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential guide for every gardener 21 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Borrowed this from a library & on reading immediately ordered from Amazon - I only wish I'd found this years ago. Just brilliantly simple explanations and guidance. The illustrations very easy to understand. By far the best gardening book I have ever bought

1.0 out of 5 stars IT'S OK 9 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I wanted a book which would simply tell me when the best time to prune was, how to do it and what not to do. This book seems to be aimed at 'those in the know' it's full of technical terminolgy and is difficult to follow.
