2.0 out of 5 stars mainly Rubbish 20 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I cannot remember why I bought this book, persumably to complete my horse-racing-libary, but this is surely a book you can be without. In fact you should be! It hardly mentiones the "Horses" from the title-line, but all the husbands for sure. I do like gossip and I do like family-insight, but not about a very controversial person, who clearly thought that monetary wealth made her better than us normal mortals, and whose political incorrectness (to put it mildly) was neither charming nor "funny". Vickers certainly trys to portrait his subject with a lot of sympathy, but nothing Mrs Plesch did does draw any sympathy towards her. As the book does recollect some intersting historical developments and into the genealogy of some very infuential families, it does get a second star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as Trivial as it sounds 3 May 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is not a literary work by a long shot, but for those who are interested , it is an illuminating insight into the minds of strong, clever , selfish women of that class and era who knew what they wanted and how to go about having it. Mme Plesch betrays almost nothing of the depth of her feelings in some .bruising situations, but she tells it like it was and it's a matter of reading through the lines. The peek into the values of wartime European aristocracy. also fascinates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping 27 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Was hooked - Etti Plesch's life story is a fascinating glance into society and world events - the precariousness of life when war strikes and the resourcefulness of people like her. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done 8 Oct 2008

It took three weeks to arrive but I assume that was because it was an import. The price was half of what a tony bookstore on New York's Madison Avenue wanted to charge me so I was happy with this deal.
