5.0 out of 5 stars Horses Arse - The funniest book I've ever read., 5 April 2007
By Andrew Williams (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Horses Arse (Hardcover)
Charlie Owen has captured exactly, the slightly dark, often cynical humour that exists or at least did exist in the Police Service. This book is both hysterically funny and yet deeply moving in almost equal measure. Whilst it is set in Manchester, it could I suspect, be set in almost any urban overflow in Britain and manages to cause the reader to empathise with every character, even the baddies. I love it, and hope that he follows it up with another one very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly original, 18 Feb 2007
By A female fan (South London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Horses Arse (Paperback)
I am not what you would describe as an avid reader. However, I have read this book numerous times, and laughed out loud each and every time.
Written almost entirely from a male perspective, ( I am female ) this book is gritty yet hilarious, with the language to match. The author somehow manages to describe and relate characters and the story as it unfolds, as if he were talking into your ear. The animated descriptions that instantly come to life in your head as the scenes unfold, place the reader back in the 70's with the unruly mob of police officers constantly battling for one-up manship with the local criminals. A gift of a book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hatfield writ large, 2 Mar 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Horses Arse (Paperback)
Thinly disguised, this book is about Hatfield policing at its rawest. A Splendid read.

1.0 out of 5 stars disgusted
I bought this book as its title seems to indicate a book of humour. It is no such thing. The title " Horses arse" seems to reflect the attitude of SOME police on a section of... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Absolutely stupendous. One of those books that does not need a linear plot, (by the way it has a superb asynchronous plot) and I suspect if it written in a linear fashion, would... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful
This "novel" is completely devoid of plot, character development or, frankly anything of note. There are plenty of books out there which give the inside track on "the Job", but... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Obvious
Have not read such an predictable book for ages. As has been said in previous reviews, this is just the memoirs of an ex-policeman made into a novel. Schoolboy humour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick read with lots of laugh
This is a quick read but is full of laughs. It's uncouth, vulgar and detestable and that's why I loved it. The review of "Life on Mars meets the Sweeney" is right on the button!
