This was a strange serial to watch. As the book was written by the same person who wrote the fantastic "To Serve Them All My Days," I was expecting it to be on the same lines. To me, the director should have shelved this till later on, when he had honed his skills on something else. It could have been a hit like "To Serve Them All My Days," but as it is, its a poor cousin. The story was ok, but it is let down by the directing, and very badly by the casting. The main actors are reasonably ok, but the atrocious acting for the secondary characters, let the serial down. Another nail in its coffin was the ghastly insipid colours of the cinematic side of the 70's made film. I think I would have preferred to watch it in black and white rather than the sepia-like faded colours of the 70's. The Forsthe Saga was black and white and written and created in the 60's but runs rings around this. The story line improved as you got into it, if you overlooked the ghastly over acting. Personaly I would like to see the BBC take this one on board and do it again. With the right production staff, would come out like the superb "Cranford", or "Larkrise to Candleford." It would make a great release for the centenary of the Great War.
