A pretty good collection of songs, but in my opinion slightly ruined by bizarre production. The snare drum sounds weird, but the vocals are great. True Colours is a work of genius. Favourite song: Sour Grapes.
I played this album probably 5 times in a row when I bought it. Emotional, punk-heavy, melodic, Frankie Stubbs sounds like the illegitimate love-child of Lemmy (Motorhead) and Tom Waites. Check out "True Colours" (yes, the Cyndi Lauper track) - my personal fav: "LorryDriver's Son". A must-buy (I can't believe they're English - they are TOO GOOD)
I found this album languishing in our huge CD collection and realised that I hadn't listened to it properly. That was last week & I can't stop listening to it. Despite having heard Leatherface before, for some reason I had not realised how brilliant they are. This album is wonderful. Frankie's growly delivery is fab and the music is an unusual mix of a wall of sound + beautiful melodies. I particularly like Sour Grapes but because the rest of the album is so good (I agree with other reviewers that 'Choice' and LorryDrivers Son' are also standout) there's no temptation to just listen to one track. This is a complete thing. I am seriously kicking myself that, despite living the the North East in the early '90s and even seeing Frankie in the audience at a China Drum gig, I have never seen this band live. I don't know how this compares to Mush as I can't get hold of it but this is one of the best albums I have ever heard. If you don't have it buy it and you will end up listening with your mouth open when you should be doing something else! Lets hope they re-release Mush and tour the UK soon.
