Horseback Riding - So You Want To Ride A Horse?
How To Get Started And What You Need To Learn

Have you had dreams of riding Black Beauty since you were a kid? When you watched Alec galloping the Black down the backstretch in the Black Stallion, were you imaging yourself guiding the powerful desert stallion to the finish? Do you find yourself doodling horses in the margins of your notes instead of listening at meetings or at school? Maybe your son or daughter keeps begging for a pony?

For many of us, when the horse bug bites, we just never get over it, and age really doesn’t matter. Horsy kids can be as young as toddlers or as old as grandmas. The good news is that horseback riding is one of those sports that you can start at almost any age, and lessons can be tapered to your needs by age, athleticism or interest. So, if you’ve always been wishing to know the feeling of what it was like to be astride a noble equine, now’s the time! You’re in for a treat as you visit a whole new world. Only one forewarning—once you get caught up in the horse world, it may be hard going back to the real world!
If you want to take up horseback riding, even just relaxing trail riding, it is suggested that you take lessons so you understand the horse’s nature and movement as well as the riding position, safe handling and the basics of control while riding.

Being among horses offers you a unique perspective on a sport that requires you to learn how to communicate with a non-human partner who, though he often wants to please you, has a mind of his own. That’s not meant to sound like a warning. Instead, it’s a very exciting challenge, and when the partnership works, you will be inspired and awestruck in a way that no other sport could make you feel. This is your opportunity to become one with one of nature’s most elegant creatures. Unlike a bicycle, tennis racquet or golf club, your horse sometimes needs some convincing that you are indeed the leader, and that’s just one aspect of horse behavior that you need to know before beginning your horseback riding lessons. But when that communication works and horseback riding grows almost effortless as you and your horse become a team, you’ll never forget the feeling!

After living in the Northeast forty-five years, and encouraged by my daughter who loved horses from the time she was five until adulthood, I decided to venture out and visit several horse farms. I was someone who loved the country, but had no clue on how to ride a horse, or any knowledge on horse behavior. After a few years of introducing horseback riding lessons, my daughter rode a pony, and I went on trail rides with an adult horse. If I read this book, prior to riding, my experience would have been much more successful and enjoyable. I highly recommend this valuable how-to guide to all horse lovers, and anyone interested in horseback riding, or owning a horse. Everything the author points out in this book, I learned the hard way, and that's not the learning experience you wish to obtain. This book covers the essential rules and helpful tips on how to achieve the ultimate, satisfying experience of horseback riding. A key factor to success for this sport is a relationship between you and the horse as a team, learning about horse behavior, and crucial safety measures. Understanding the nature of the horse, basics of control, and who the leader is are all helpful tips covered well throughout the interesting pages of this book. There is a major difference between no knowledge and excellent guidance that will determine great success for this adventure. The horse does indeed have a mind of its own, and this is only one minor learning detail for the beginner horseback rider to absorb. Read this book prior to fulfilling your dream, and you will be very happy that you did.

Great book! As with anything Charlie Hicks writes, it is full of practical advice and sound training information. I love the way Charlie teaches - not only great technical methods, but also wonderful insight into the mind and heart of the horse. You'll learn to do it right, and your relationship with your horse will thrive!

This is a 39 page snapshot of a 600 page book. At .99 cents I should have known - but Amazon should advertise the book as a teaser.

I wish I had this book before I got my first horse! This is a great book full of tips and instructions for beginner riders and anyone considering buying a horse or taking lessons. Also good for those who already ride and/or own horses as a reminder of the basics of riding and handling that we may forget, and tips to avoid bad habits in how we train and handle our horses.

Every rider should read this book no matter what level they are at. I would say that after reading and getting your first or a few riding lesson's a new rider should reread this book to really get the real meat of the information. For me, it really reinforces the idea of "less is more" being gentle in commands so as not to dull the senses of the horse and truely get good response from the horse with little effort from the rider. In my opinion if you digest the concepts of this short book, in a short time a person can be a very good rider. This author [Charlie Hicks] has written many articles about [good] horsemanship and his way of training horses is one of the best ways for a rider to overcome many obstacles. Learning how they are trained will help the rider understand the horse and how it learns what you want and you learn how to get what you want from the horse just by asking and not demanding. It makes all the difference in the world for the pleasure of the horse and rider as a team. Equals more fun and safety for both.
