Product Description

Product Description

This book sets out to show you that lightness in hand can be achieved by every horse. For some horses it is easy, due to conformation and a general aptitude for focusing intently on the challenges of being trained. For others, it is not so. However, if the training is undertaken slowly, with gentleness and respect, lightness in the hand is eventually possible. A supple, flexible horse whose back and entire body is strong and correctly collected to support the rider's weight, is balanced and ready for the demands of any movement laterally or vertically. A horse that is light in hand is proof of the highest order that the will of the rider and horse are truly one. Simply, lightness is born of trust. Ellen Schuthof's training of horses is different from other trainers, in that it emphasizes first the comfort, security and happiness of the horse. She stages short lessons to engage the horse's attention and cooperation. If the horse becomes confused, she immediately asks him to 'go back in time' to a point where he has mastered a task, and asks him to perform that task so as to restore his confidence. The horse finishes the short lesson unstressed, full of enthusiasm and pride in his new accomplishments, and with an ever deepening bond with his trainer.

A Beautiful Book 12 Feb 2011
By Tinker1
Format:Hardcover
I absolutely love this book, it is beautilfully photographed and written. I have recently broken and backed my Welsh Section D. I used a lot of the ground work in this book and another very good book called schooling exercises in hand. This has not only given us great trust in each other but has enabled him to maintain his suppleness and has given him great confidence. He has gone from a wild beast that went out like a cork from a champagne bottle to a calm balanced keen willing little horse. I beleive these methods have allowed us both to believe in ourselves. These books do not have to just be all about breaking the youngster, I believe these books will be an invaluable asset throughout our training. A hugely informative book that know trainer should be without.

The work in hand is the best way to approach a horse: they do "work in hand" with each others since their born.
Anyway the feeling of the line on him is something that i think should be introduced after a work at liberty. There is a very good material about this kind of work:the best is from Carolyn Resnik. After a good foundation at liberty i think that the book of this kind woman about the Work in Hand is a great work: is considerate about the horse, is really gradual and has a lot of really explaining images. I'm not always agree about the biomechanicla statements but we have here a woman that really knows about tradition of ART of Horsemanship and has done the great work to share her knowledge in the best way . Thank's a lot. Monica
