WARNING - You will become addicted!,

This review is from: The Horse Lover's Bible: The Complete Practical Guide to Horse Care and Management (Hardcover)
You need to understand that until recently, I HAD NO INTEREST IN HORSES. I could identify a horse if I saw one in a field as I was driving by but that was about it. The thought of climbing on a horses back and actually riding one never mind owning one, was about as far from my mind as a trip to the moon or taking my bank manager out for dinner! At the age of 50, my wife decided we were becoming boring and middle aged and needed a new interest. She decided that I wouldn't take to knitting (she did try) but I put her off. Then she surprised me by buying this book 'The Horse Lovers Bible'. Useless to me and I had to admit, I shoved it to one side and left it to gather dust...until I was dragged kicking and screaming to my first riding lesson (I was told we were going to Tesco - my wife is like that). My wife got onto her 'normal' sized horse, a beautiful bay gelding called Walter and I thought, this was a piece of cake! Then they brought out the poor creature who was supposed to support my 'manly frame'. His name is Meat Loaf and he stands 17 hh.(That is a very, very big horse!!!) Once I recovered from my faint, I was pursuaded to get on his back and I have to say, the experience will be with me forever. Meat Loaf is a true gentleman and he is starting to teach me what I have been missing for 40 years - the friendship of a horse. On returning home, I picked up this book and started to read it. I have to say, that it is comprehensive, easy to read and an invaluable guide. I have learned so much from reading the first few chapters and my understanding of Meat Loaf just gets better and better. I can hihgly recommend this regardless if you are experienced or like me, have never been near a horse in your life. I am now fascinated by horses and certainly it has encouraged me to think hard about the possibility of owning one of my own. The book pulls no punches about level of committment needed to care for a horse as it gives a realistic insight. A must for anyone of any level who has aninterest in horses.
It should carry a warning as should all horses - "YOU WILL BECOME ADDICTED" I am just about to enter my first competition.

The Horse Lover's Bible: The Complete Practical Guide to Horse Care and Management
Whilst my partner is an experienced rider in both competition and leisure and through her passion, whilst a relatively new starter it is now a major commitment in my life as well. This is a really useful book and one of the better ones I have come across within the library of horse books we have. It is geared towards people like me who know a bit about horses, but want to learn more though also useful to the experienced rider judging by the comments from my partner. The health and first aid section in particular is really comprehensive, and I the way the author stresses not to panic and to use common sense at all times provides the reassurance that you sometimes lack when in the stable amongst your peers. The photos are also really helpful in illustrating the text, especially with regard to show turn out, something that i am now considering. Its a great hands on approach to looking after horses and I like the way the author explains the horse in its natural environment and how this should be considered when dealing with the horse in the unnatural environment of the stable yard. Definately a book to keep near at hand.

Invaluable Horse Bible,

This review is from: The Horse Lover's Bible: The Complete Practical Guide to Horse Care and Management (Hardcover)
This is a superbly comprehensive book covering the whole spectrum of horse care written by someone who clearly has had long experience handling and working with them. Useful hints and details sit alongside general advice on equine welfare, it really informs on every page. Whether you are a professional or amateur horse owner you would learn and enjoy reading this book. It is perfect for teenagers/young adults too, who may well be starting out with ponies and horses and need a reliable and informative 'Bible' from which they can learn and absorb valuable knowledge. Truly Invaluable.
