A non genetic approach on horse colors. Clear and precise., 20 Nov 2000

This review is from: Horse and Pony Coat Colours (Allen Photographic Guides) (Paperback)
It is astonishing how much information can be loaded on so few pages. And yet in a way that is charmingly easy to adopt. I loved this book on first sight. The horse colors are presented logically, building on basic colors, with photographs that make the point absolutely clear every time. The 'author's tips' are nice litlle rules of thumb and reminders. Lovely. This book is not big if you count the pages, but I'd say it is big in its marvellous punctuality and clearness. If it was just a bit smaller in size, it would make a wonderful field guide. You can easily determine most horse colors by just browsing through the pictures. And I guess there cannot be a better book for children wishing to learn to understand horse colors. If you want your horse color book without genetics, you have found your book.

A superb & concise publication with excellent illustrations., 5 Nov 2000

This review is from: Horse and Pony Coat Colours (Allen Photographic Guides) (Paperback)
The author's use of 'building blocks' to represent the basic horse colours upon which to build all other shades and patterns will do much to unravel the mystery of horse coat colour. The illustrations are generous and of superb quality. This book should be of interest to every horse or pony owner, particularly those who register foals, but it will also appeal to any one, old or young, who enjoys equines.

A beautiful book that teaches, not preaches!, 12 Nov 2000

This review is from: Horse and Pony Coat Colours (Allen Photographic Guides) (Paperback)
I have been so impressed with this book that I am ordering some extra copies for Christmas presents - they will make ideal (and reasonably priced!) presents for all ages! (No, I am not being paid to say this! These are my own words and thoughts!) I'm not joking; this book (or booklet) has been well presented by the publishers but what makes it really stand out are the glorious photographs of the different types of horse and pony coat colours (hence the title of the book!!) and the minimal text that delivers just the right amount of backup to the photo's; enough to explain why the horses and ponies look the way they do, without blinding me with science. The book is also peppered with helpful "Author's Notes" which has helped to fill some of the gaps in my understanding. After all, the only things that I knew about horses and ponies before reading this book was that they had a head, tail, four legs and co-starred (along with their jockeys) in races - and that they were mere "supporting" cast members in Western films! I can thoroughly recommend this book to everybody. Educational without being "preached at", a joy to the eye and just a thoroughly pleasant "easy-to-read" read - and helping charity at the same time (I understand that all royalties are going to the International League for the Protection of Horses).
