Book Description

1 Jun 2012
As well as four classic fantasy novels and a series of 'occult detective' stories, William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) produced a large number of sea-faring tales, many of them steeped in elements of supernatural terror. Hodgson's vividly drawn descriptions of revulsive oceanic entities often pre-echo Lovecraft in their evocation of squamous, deep-six deliria, while the latter also acknowledged Hodgson's masterful evocations of elemental disquiet and disorder.

5.0 out of 5 stars The stories are great 28 Dec 2012
By Paul C. Gorman - Published on Amazon.com
Hodgson wrote some great stories, and they deserve better than a one star rating.

The other reviewer's complaint is ill founded ("Stir contents of an existing collection once..."). These stories are all in the public domain, and ADRIFT ON THE HAUNTED SEAS is out of print anyhow. You can buy this book in good conscience, or just grab the stories from Project Gutenberg.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ehh..Most of the stories are boring 27 Jan 2014
By Cward55 - Published on Amazon.com
I did not buy this off of amazon but I saw that the other reviews for this really didn't explain the book that well at all so I thought I would put my two cents in. Now first off I love horror or science fiction books that take place in the sea, but this book was pretty boring for the most part. It started off pretty good with A Tropical Horror but then slowly went downhill. Some highlights are, The Derelict, Demons of the Sea, The Weed Men, and From the Tideless Sea. I have read worse, way worse but this book I really tried to like but just like I said before most of the stories are boring. I would recommend if you really wanted to read it to go to the library and have them order it for you but I blind bought this for like $9 and that's money wasted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Horrors From Haunted Seas: Weird Oceanic Tales 27 Jun 2013
By Roger M - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great collection of seafaring horror stories from a terrific author of such. I would have said I Loved this product except for the usual proof-reading errors throughout the book, especially disruptive in the early stories of the book. Many are so obvious I can't help but think English was not the principal language of the proof-reader; and again many are so disruptive as to damage the concentration and enjoyment of the reader. Despite these flaws the works CAN be enjoyed (with a little effort) as the masterpieces that they are.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stir contents of an existing collection once, change some words in the title, and voila: a new collection 15 Oct 2012
By James Rockhill - Published on Amazon.com
In 2005, Douglas A. Anderson put together a collection of Hodgson's best short fiction for Cold Springs Press, with a sampling of Hodgson's verse, an apt selection from his nonfiction, and an intelligent, well-researched introduction. That book was entitled ADRIFT ON THE HAUNTED SEAS. You may recognize it as one of the titles listed on the Amazon page for the present book from Creation Oneiros, under the heading: "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed".

The book under present consideration is almost identical to the Cold Springs Press collection, and the publisher has not even bothered to vary the title very much in order to cover its tracks.
