Product Description

Horror, The Film Reader brings together key articles to provide a comprehensive resource for students of horror cinema. Mark Jancovich's introduction traces the development of horror film from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari to The Blair Witch Project, and outlines the main critical debates. Combining classic and recent articles, each section explores a central issue of horror film, and features an editor's introduction outlining the context of debates.

In the previous chapter 1 briefly introduced the distinction between basic and surplus repression, developed out of Freud by Marcuse, and given definitive expression in a book that should be far better known than it is: Repression, by Gad Horowitz. Read the first page

Mark Jancovitch is a well respected academic expert in the horror genre, so I was expecting an in-depth discussion of the genre from a range of writing selected through his knowledgem which is considerable. I was not to be disappointed. Not only did I read of the influence of horror as a genre over the film industry (there was once a time where if you called a film a horror film, its chances of doing well in box office terms were smashed. Think of "The Others" and you'll understand!Horror, as with the western, has always been associated with badly made, over-acted B-movies and has had to fight hard to prove that it is a genre worth analysing), but I also found my own research into the history of horror as a genre through German Expressionist cinema, and into feminism (screaming or sexualised women)and masculinity (bravado to replace the injured masculinity [their fear])in horror, to be views that were shared by the book's contributors! A fantastic book, useful for any serious student of the genre.

I really am enjoying this work. The essays are well written, clear, and the perfect read for any one looking to learn about, or hear new perspectives on, the horror genre. The array of different topics covered ensures that there is definitely something for everyone. If you enjoy reading about film, this book will not disappoint.

boring 17 Oct 2007
By Kira Dawn Foltz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I definitely don't care for this book or any other Wallflower Press book I've read so far. They're just boring and care more about films from decades ago. They don't integrate anything of modern substance.
