These four classic horror films can be watched either in original black and white or digitally remastered in colour. Ed Wood's cult horror 'Bride of the Monster' (1955) was financed by cattle rancher, Donald McCoy, on two conditions: that his son Tony would star, and that Wood would make a powerful anti-nuke statement. Bela Lugosi stars as Dr Vornoff, a mad scientist on a quest to create a new race of atomic people to conquer the world. To create these super-beings he performs a delicate operation - he straps a lampshade to their head and administers a huge electric current. However, his experiments succeed only in killing his subjects. He proposes to use a beautiful newspaper reporter, Janet Lawton (Loretta King), but is himself experimented upon by his giant mute assistant, Lobo (Tor Johnson). Vornoff becomes immensely strong, able to resist police bullets, and is killed only after falling prey to a giant rubber octopus. Lugosi also stars in 'The Devil Bat' (1941) as Dr Carruthers, a mad scientist who - in order to revenge himself upon his former employers Martin Heath (Edward Mortimer) and Henry Morton (Guy Usher), who have become rich on a formula he devised - develops an aftershave lotion that causes gigantic killer bats to attack anyone who wears it. 'House On Haunted Hill' (1958) is a classic Hollywood horror starring master of the macabre Vincent Price. Price plays millionaire Frederick Loren, who challenges five people to spend the night in a haunted mansion for the prize of $10,000. Taking up the bet, the volunteers soon find themselves trapped with a host of spirits, ghouls, and deranged killers. Price also stars in 'The Last Man On Earth', the 1964 film adaptation of Richard Matheson's acclaimed horror novel 'I Am Legend', which has since also been filmed as 'The Omega Man' (1971) with Charlton Heston, and 'I Am Legend' (2007) with Will Smith. As a result of the immunity he developed while working in Central America, Dr Robert Morgan (Price) is the only survivor of a catastrophic plague that has swept the world. It seems he is all alone in the world but, when night falls, plague victims rise from their graves to form an undead army, thirsty for blood...

This box set is great value and a chance to fill holes in any horror collection.
First up, we have House on Haunted Hill. This is the least enjoyable film in the set. Essentially, this is a low rent retread of Les Diaboliques with old dark house trappings. Vincent Price carries the film but it's forgettable stuff and the house isn't even haunted.
Price also carries The Last Man on Earth but at least this time this is intentional. This is the first adaptation of Richard Matheson's I am Legend and is based on a script he delivered to Hammer Films only to see the British Censor Board forbid its production. It became an Italian production filmed in Rome. The film-makers apparently wanted to disguise its european origin and so made the location shooting fairly anonymous in order for it pass as an american setting. This helps the film as the focus is rightly on Price's character rather than money shots of Times Square and Broadway. Price is also presented as an everyman, rather than the scientist demi-god of the remakes. This is an under-rated gem.
Bela Lugosi tops the bill for The Devil Bat. This is a typical poverty row production with cheap effects and ripe dialogue. Lugosi is a doctor/pharmacist driven to seek revenge on his business associates through the use of a killer bat-attracting aftershave. He brings great charm to the part and seems to be having a great time sending up his horror credentials.
The final film in the set is Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster. This also stars Lugosi in what was, I believe, his final speaking role. He looks older and worn down but so is his character and he rallies to give a great performance, particularly when contemplating his lonely exile in a barnstorming speech that was repeated by Martin Landau as Lugosi in the film Ed Wood.

This has some of the greatest horror masterpieces of all time, "Bride of the Monster", "The Devil Bat", "House on Haunted Hill" and "The last Man on Earth". They are all graet films, but as far as the remastering goes the best one is "House on Haunted Hill". The colour is just stunning. I would recommend this box set to all who like good films (or if they Just like Bela Lugosi and/or Vincent Price).
