    More About the Author

Francesca Simon was born in the United States and attended both Yale and Oxford universities. For ten years she worked as a freelance journalist. She now writes full-time and has had many books published including the best-selling Horrid Henry series and many picture books. Francesca is constantly in demand at bookshops, schools and book festivals all over the country where she talks to children about her books. She lives in North London with her family.

Horrid Henry books and audio have sold over 15 million copies in the UK alone and CITV have made a hugely popular cartoon series based on the nation's favourite naughty boy. 2008 saw a Horrid Henry exhibition at Seven Stories, Newcastle called Up To Mischief With Horrid Henry.

Horrid Henry Robs the Bank was shortlisted for the Children's Book of the Year award at the 2009 British Book Awards, the third consecutive year of nomination, following a win in 2008.

Francesca Simon is the third most borrowed children's author from UK libraries and Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend was the most borrowed children's title in 2009!

    Francesca Simon on Francesca Simon:

"I've always seen my Horrid Henry books as westerns for kids. Henry is an outlaw, who behaves dreadfully, yet often triumphs. Just as adults like reading about people on the edge, so kids get a thrill from a child who always acts on impulse and never worries about the consequences.

I got the idea for the books when a friend asked me to write a book about a horrid child. Horrid Henry was born on the spot. I immediately saw a truculent little boy, the despair of his well-meaning liberal parents. I was also interested in exploring sibling rivalry, which I know something about as the eldest of four, and families where the parents decide that one child is 'good' and the other 'bad', which is how Perfect Peter came about. Soon Henry took on a vigorous life of his own, aided by the bossy madam next door Moody Margaret, who is an amalgam of myself and how I imagine Margaret Thatcher might have been as a child.

I started writing children's books in 1989 after the birth of my son, Josh. Suddenly all I was reading was books for children, and I started, to my surprise, to get ideas. One day we'd been reading lots of animal noises books, and he asked me what noise a caterpillar made. I thought 'wouldn't it be great to do an animal noise voice of all the unusual animals kids see in books?' That became my first book - But What Does the Hippopotamus say?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrid Henry Wakes The Dead 2 Oct. 2009
    By Doris
The latest Horrid Henry books lives up to the good standard of the rest of the series.
As soon as the book arrived my son had his head straight into the book and was enjoying the four stories.
The first story focuses on Horrid Henry and Perfect Peter's fight over the TV remote control - something that many children who have a sibling will relate to!
The second story is about Henry versus Margaret to become school president while the third returns to Henry and Peter and their fight over a present.
Finally, to complete the book is a story about Henry trying to win a talent contest.
For fans of Horrid Henry this would make a super present.

This book was really good and used for Son's Homework reading, perfect size chapters for son and myself to read. Most of all my son is 7 years old and he chuckled whilst reading and wants to read more Horrid Henry books! Boys or Girls will love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Mishaps, Mischief and Misadventure! 24 Nov. 2011
Horrid Henry's (mis)adventures are a firm favourite with my nine year old son and this collection of four fun tales is not short of mishaps, sibling rivalry and general mischief.

The only slight disappointment is that the first story in this edition 'Horrid Henry and the TV remote' has previously been published within other editions under the title 'Horrid Henry and the Comfy Black Chair.' This was a shame as we believed that this contained four completely new stories. The only consolation is that the stories are so funny and so very well written that actually neither of us minded reading it again! I do wish that the titles of stories weren't changed in this way, however, as it does make it difficult for parents to keep track of which have already been read and purchased.

Needless to say the following three stories 'Horrid Henry's School Election', 'Horrid Henry's Bad Present' and 'Horrid Henry Wakes the Dead' were as funny as ever and confirmed that there are plenty more new stories and ways for Henry to plot to take over the world - with things always managing to go astray at the end. For any parents worried about their own offspring picking up Henry's bad ways, there is a subtle moral message at the end of each story and, more often than not, Henry's mischief does backfire!

5.0 out of 5 stars World Book Week project 11 Mar. 2013
Horrid Henry was in a play at school called 'Wakes the Dead'. The winner of the prize would appear on a tv programme called 'Talent Tigers;' .The main character is Horrid Henry. My favourite character is Perfect Peter because he's friendly and i like friendly people. My favourite part of the book is when Henry goes on stage and pretends to wake the dead but of course its only peter in a skeleton mask in a pretend coffin. I like the part when he wakes the dead because it is exciting what is going to happen in the book. I give this book out of 5 5/5 because it is great to read the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was awesome! 26 July 2015
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was absolutely amazing! The cover was such a beautiful shade of red and the shading on Henry's face was extremely good. The cover is very intriguing and the story is amazing. The vocabulary is a very high standard and it makes a very enjoyable read. The plot is a gripper and it makes you want to keep reading until you've finished! I loved it!
