More About the Author

Francesca Simon was born in the United States and attended both Yale and Oxford universities. For ten years she worked as a freelance journalist. She now writes full-time and has had many books published including the best-selling Horrid Henry series and many picture books. Francesca is constantly in demand at bookshops, schools and book festivals all over the country where she talks to children about her books. She lives in North London with her family.

Horrid Henry books and audio have sold over 15 million copies in the UK alone and CITV have made a hugely popular cartoon series based on the nation's favourite naughty boy. 2008 saw a Horrid Henry exhibition at Seven Stories, Newcastle called Up To Mischief With Horrid Henry.

Horrid Henry Robs the Bank was shortlisted for the Children's Book of the Year award at the 2009 British Book Awards, the third consecutive year of nomination, following a win in 2008.

Francesca Simon is the third most borrowed children's author from UK libraries and Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend was the most borrowed children's title in 2009!

Francesca Simon on Francesca Simon:

"I've always seen my Horrid Henry books as westerns for kids. Henry is an outlaw, who behaves dreadfully, yet often triumphs. Just as adults like reading about people on the edge, so kids get a thrill from a child who always acts on impulse and never worries about the consequences.

I got the idea for the books when a friend asked me to write a book about a horrid child. Horrid Henry was born on the spot. I immediately saw a truculent little boy, the despair of his well-meaning liberal parents. I was also interested in exploring sibling rivalry, which I know something about as the eldest of four, and families where the parents decide that one child is 'good' and the other 'bad', which is how Perfect Peter came about. Soon Henry took on a vigorous life of his own, aided by the bossy madam next door Moody Margaret, who is an amalgam of myself and how I imagine Margaret Thatcher might have been as a child.

I started writing children's books in 1989 after the birth of my son, Josh. Suddenly all I was reading was books for children, and I started, to my surprise, to get ideas. One day we'd been reading lots of animal noises books, and he asked me what noise a caterpillar made. I thought 'wouldn't it be great to do an animal noise voice of all the unusual animals kids see in books?' That became my first book - But What Does the Hippopotamus say?"

Review

'Little boys just can't get enough of Horrid Henry.' -- Richard Varley, THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

'sees Henry back on truly horrid form. Brilliant illustrations and a hilarious collection of classic stories your kids will love.' -- Natasha Harding, THE SUN

'Each story has enough twists to keep bad kids shrieking with glee' -- Amanda Craig, THE TIMES

'Horrid Henry is the unpleasant, conniving little mischeif maker who has nevertheless helped Francesca Simon carve out a career as a best-selling writer.' -- David Whetstone, THE JOURNAL

'I love the Horrid Henry books by Francesca Simon. They have lots of funny bits in. And Henry always gets into trouble!' -- Mia, age 6, BBC LEARNING IS FUN

'It's easy to see why Horrid Henry is the best-selling character for 5-8 year olds. He's a modern day Just William. Henry might be unbelievably naughty, totally wicked and utterly horrid, but he is frequently credited with converting the most reluctant readers into enthusiastic ones.... superb in its simplicity.' -- LIVERPOOL ECHO

'My children love Horrid Henry as much as I loathe him. While I tut at his bad behaviour, they delight in teh one-boy crimwave's ability to pull the wool over his parent's eyes... Simon's hero is back with the kind of antics that would make Supernanny rip up her sticker chart.' -- Janet Christie, SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

'With the World Cup still fresh in mind, Horrid Henry and the Football Fiend has the determinedly naughty Henry competing for a prized seat at the match between his local team and Man Utd... You can't help admiring his ingenuity. Tony Ross's energetic illustrations add to the fun.' -- Angela Kiverstein, JEWISH CHRONICLE

'Wonderfully anarchic fun for new readers and Henry fans alike. The football scene was reminiscent of several of this summer's World Cup matches!' -- Adam Guillain, JUNIOR EDUCATION

'sees Henry back on truly horrid form. Brilliant illustrations and a hilarious collection of classic stories your kids will love.' -- Natasha Harding, THE SUN

I recommend these books for children aged 6-9. They are great at encouraging children to read. I initially bought the story tapes for my reluctant reader son. Both my children (boy 8, girl 7) loved the stories so much that soon they were both devouring the books. They are aimed at a younger audience than (beloved but less accessible) Just William. The typeface is large and easy to read, the stories short and fast paced, but most importantly, they are really funny and Horrid Henry appeals to the rebel in all of us.

Horrid henry books always make me chuckle and this is no exeption they are funny for adults and children alike and they use a wide range of topics. The one slight critisisum i have of it is that i find that some of the stories can be a tad repetative at times. Overall a great fun book sutable for all ages and it is garretied to make you laugh!

I would recommend this book to and 10 or 9 year old because it has a little bit of advanced vocabulary that your young children will understand. If reading this book to a child replace the advanced words.

This book was the best book I have ever read since I got my first horrid Henry+ the football tips really helped because I removed the studs from the boots of the other team and I used my hands to score a goal when the referee wasn't' looking and tied up some laces as well and guess what all that stuff really helped me to be the best and laugh around so hard that I couldn't breathe anymore so I hope you are willing to give it a shot too when the referee Is not looking and tripping players up and try to do all that stiffened by the way rock on Henry ( in a horrid way!!!!

My son (who has just turned 9) loves the Horrid Henry series and is delighted when a new book is published. Bought this as soon as it came out and we weren't disappoined. He laughed out loud at Henry's antics. Particularly enjoyed the story about Henry "improving" Perfect Peter's diary. The characters are brilliant and whilst you may cringe at some of Henry's antics you can't help but be amused.

I am 13 years old and I've read `Horrid Henry and a football fiend'.

I liked this book because Henry played football. Also, he was mischievous.

Henry plays a good role and is the main character. I have read other books about Horrid Henry and I have enjoyed reading all of them.
