Book Description

1 July 2011

However arresting, outlandish, or hilarious, the poems in Horoscopes for the Dead are typically prompted by the familiar things of the world: dogs, stars, food, love, and marriage as well as life's local triumphs and disappointments, joys and shames. Collins's gift is to unlock the mysterious in the ordinary, and he is always careful to take his reader with him. Indeed, no other living poet has done more to reengage and revitalize poetry's readership, or so deservedly earned its trust.

Few poets have his ability to mix bold, unadorned statements with lyric invention and imaginative richness. And here in these new poems, Collins's inimitable tone - wry, smart, funny, and wise - takes on a darker shade, as the poems declare a deep awareness of transience and mortality. The result is the revelation of a world more precious, more fragile, richer in colour and form than ever.

Praise for Billy Collins

‘A writer . . . fully aware of his work’s power to delight’ New York Times

‘A poet of plentitude, irony, and Augustan grace’ New Yorker

Product Description

`The process of creation is often the subject of these poems even while Collins acknowledges our limited time on Earth, and mourns it . . . Collins is one of a generation of more accessible poets who eschew the obscurities of the modernists, but this does not dilute his poetry; it enriches it.' --The Herald

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Collins 20 Feb 2012
Brilliant collection from Billy, he makes the mundane events in life seem interesting, never hurried, poems about the illness of his dog ,lying under the stars at night and the title poem Horoscopes for the Dead itself leave the reader wanting more. As Adrian Mitchell wrote "most people ignore poetry because poetry ignores most people" this is poetry never to be ignored.Best of all you won't be turning to the dictionary every two minutes to find definitions of words you have never heard or are likely to use.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What can one say about any Billy Collins collection, except that as a fan I enjoy everything he writes. I love his quirky take on life and experience, also that he's not afraid to tackle any subject, from the lightest to the darkest. He makes reading poetry an exquisite pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars very intriguing 29 July 2013

I'd only heard him on audio so it was a treat to enjoy his works and savour them on the page - he is very laid back but hits the spot with acute wit

5.0 out of 5 stars Horoscopes For the Dead 13 Sep 2011
Another 50 or so wonderfully idiosyncratic, urbane poems. Billy Collins' original and inventive take on life, and essential reading for those requiring intellectual refreshment.
