Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

James is a tender engine, numbered 5 and coloured red with gold stripes & dome. He is a 2-6-0 mixed-traffic engine, which means he can pull coaches and trucks equally well.

While James is one of "the big engines" (a trio with Gordon and Henry), he is certainly the most junior member of this clique, often resulting in him getting 'too big for his boots' (wheels). He often brags about his red paint, as though this makes him superior to other engines, a notion which is usually dispelled quickly enough.

Thomas & Friends appeared in a series of children's books in the 1940s, and have delighted children and adults alike ever since. In 1984 Thomas & Friends appeared for the first time on British television and made an immediate hit - becoming without argument an even greater favourite with the younger fan.

    Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
James is a unique model, not being directly based on any existing model in the Hornby range and, I believe, only loosely based on an existing prototype. I understand that Hornby had to very heavily modify the tooling of an existing obsolete model, so James's level of detail is very basic, showing its 1960s origins, which does have the advantage of making the model very robust. The chassis is very heavy because, in its original form, used to be motorised although James has always been tender-driven. The extra weight helps with the stability of the loco, which can be a problem with tender-driven models being driven around the layout at trainset speeds.

For the level of detail, this model is way over-priced at full RRP, so try to find one priced with a hefty discount.
