Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is my first experience of a Hornby set and I am largely impressed.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was how little there appeared to be in the box, as far as track was concerned. For the price they charge for this set, I was expecting more. But bear with me!

It's immediately obvious, once I was passed the initial disappointment of what was included, that the quality and sheer detail of the trains and track explains somewhat the cost. Putting the track together was very straightforward and getting it in the right place on the mat was easy enough too. Putting the trains on the track was initially a little fiddly, especially as one of our little ones decided that pushing it along was a good idea, prompting me to try once again to get it all lined up correctly.

Once it was all on the tracked, plugged in a ready to go, I hit the switch. Off it went. What a lovely sound there is as the train goes round the track. It's very clear that attention to detail and quality is high and for that reason I think it's going to be a favourite for many out there.

I can also see it becoming a bit of a wallet emptier. There is so much that can be added in the way of track and environment and I think I'll have to exert some self control on that front!

One thing I do think is very stingy though is the 6 month warranty. Yes the quality is good, very good, but with such quality and such a high price, 6 months seems very stingy indeed.

If you have the space, money and interest in this sort of thing, the Mallard is great. But I do think a little more could be offered as part of the original package to make it a little better in the value department

What is nice about this starter set from Hornby is that although you get an Analogue Controller. You able, when time and budget are right, to upgrade to the Hornby `Select' or Hornby `Elite' digital controller units because the set is DCC Ready. You then have the advantage being able to have control multiple trains, on all parts of your railway layout, with negligible wiring. By possibly adding these enhancements, you also can get the following:

1. Independent control or double heading control

2. Coaches with lights stay lit even when the train is stationary.

3. Realistic train movement with each model able to be given levels of acceleration and deceleration settings.

4. Point operation means fewer wires than with conventional control with no switches!

This train set has very good attention to detail; the Mallard looks really fine in its distinctive blue livery. The LNER brake coach and the two passenger coaches are done well and look quite realistic. The track itself comes in its most basic form oval plus siding; there is also a track mat. In terms of citing the track you really need to have it ideally on a purpose built board, or failing that to have it on a hard flat surface. You can probably get away with putting the set together and disassembling the set after use. Although as my Father will attest the probability of damage, with repeated dismantling and putting together the track is high and you may find yourself running through new fish plates. Placing the track on any form of carpet will probably entail derailments, the track losing power or permanent damage to the Mallard engine. My apologies for sounding in anyway negative, but unfortunately these things have happened in the past to us - as they say 'forewarned is forearmed'.

This is a pretty decent starter set as a first step into model railways.

You get a very nice detailed model of the Mallard and its tender, and three (identical and slightly less well-detailed) model coaches. The locomotive is DCC-ready. (DCC is the digital control system for model railways allowing different trains to run at different speeds o the same tracks - DCC-ready indicates that the loco has a socket into which a DCC module can be slotted in future; the controller provided with the set is not DCC-compatible.)

There is sufficient track included for a simple oval circuit with a single siding and one set of points - the points are a bit flimsy and don't seem to stay switched to one side or the other as I remember those on the model railways of my youth doing, but the track is fine otherwise. The fishplates are reassuringly tight, and it all slots together easily. There is also a "trackmat" supplied, which is a rather grand name for a large printed sheet of glossy paper with a suggested layout, to make all of which requires you to buy rather a lot of extra track and accessories - more a piece of marketing than anything really useful.

The supplied controller is a simple rheostat - you can turn the speed up and down and select forward or reverse, but it's all you need to get started.

Putting it all together took 20 minutes or so - it's reasonably obvious how you assemble it all, which is fortunate as the supplied instructions are a bit sketchy. Not really a problem, as most bits will only fit one way! One tip - this really needs a firm surface such as a table top or hardwood floor - even a low pile carpet underneath it results in regular derailments and frustration.
