I remember having Hornby trains when I was young, so I bought a Thomas the Tank Engine set from Amazon a year ago for my oldest grandson and the train set was excellent. So, this year I decided to buy a Toy Story 3 train set for my youngest grandson and I could not believe how poor the quality of the train set was. It is obvious that Hornby have had to pay such a high price to Disney for the license to produce the product that Hornby have decided to reduce the quality of the product in order to keep the price in line with their other train sets.
When the train set was opened the front wheels of the engine had already fallen off as they are only held in place with a tiny amount of glue!! The couplings are of such poor quality and design that it is impossible for a young child to remove or add the rolling stock while it is on the line. The "forward and backward" switch on the transformer does not even work properly and "Woody" became detached too easily and could have been swallowed by a smaller child.
If the train set had not been bought as a Christmas box I would have returned it to Hornby and demanded my money back under the "Sale of Goods Act" as, in my opinion it is not of merchandisable quality.
This is in no way a fault of Amazon but Hornby really should be ashamed of themselves.

Little bit disappointed with quality of this train set, which is rather flimsy and temperamental as to whether it worked or not due to poor track connections I assume. Glad I did not pay full price, and Amazon price was as much as it was worth

Bought it for my children whao are a bit young for it really - but Dad isnt! They have absolutely loved it and a good introduction to model train sets, which I think they will get into. Imagination is going out of control with them when they are playing with it - good choice.

I'm writing this review based on a price of £50 which is the new discounted price everywhere for this set. So £50 for an electric train set which also features characters from Toy Story - you really cannot complain.

The oval of track is standard Hornby sectional track. It has a really good tight fit, and shouldn't work itself loose on a temporary table top layout as the train goes round. The engine and carriages look great, but they do hide a couple of cost-saving points - the bogies are fixed in place and the wheels are a loose fit in the axles allowing them to navigate the curves! But again, what can you expect. In practice, it works fine; no derailments even over points (I've tried on a different circuit). I'm not sure how it would behave on a really complex layout with lots of points and crossings, but that's not what this set is for.

The couplings are not standard, and are a little difficult to put together, requiring firm holding of the two items as you push them together (or pull apart). Having said that, again, they look really good when coupled. But on the downside, you wont be able to use any of these with anything else from the hornby range - but I guess this is missing much of the point of this themed set.

Like all electric trains, the engine does benefit from a gentle running-in. A few laps without rolling stock is recommended. With the 3 carriages connected, the engine can cope easily - an occasional slip of the wheels adds to the fun!

The trackmat looks great, and is a real must if you are running yours on a carpeted floor, to avoid dirt and fluff getting into the mechanism. Ours fits on the dining room table (1st radius curves) - much better for my old-man back.

I agree with Frank S. In my opinion this is a toy that has been designed and produced to look authentic, which it does. However, Hornby seem to have forgotten that this is a toy for small boys with small, and not too adept, hands.
I bought this for my youngest grandson to keep at my home for when he visits. But, before letting him see it, I removed the centre axle from each bogey, I removed the front bogey of the train, I detached the couplings from the rolling stock and shaved off a lttle plastic from inside the snap connectors (then replaced them on the rolling stock). This last action was to ease the amount of force required to connect and disconnect the items.
I have now made this set suitable for my grandson to play with without any real loss of effect. By the way, woody droke off at the slightest touch.

The set only cost me £37 but I think Hornby should study their customers and not the license holder of their product.

This is absolutely terrible. Cheap plastic control which doesn't work, flimsy trains which don't sit on flimsy rails and the so called play mat is paper. We've managed to get it working once and then it kept stopping or de railing. My son was so disappointed but he did the right thing and put it in the bin, the only place it should be!

I bought this a year ago for my then 3 year old, but decided to put it away for a while because it wasn't really appropriate for his age. A year on, now aged 4 - he's still too young for this. I'd say it's more suitable for a 7 year old. However, we have played with this for a few hours today and the train is already broken. Woody and Buzz were the first to snap off. Shortly after the actual trains started breaking. Also noticed that the back and forward switch doesn't work too great either. I bought this at a discounted price - I'm very happy i didn't pay more than i did on this item. I'll be sticking to wooden train sets for now.
