I'm writing this review based on a price of £50 which is the new discounted price everywhere for this set. So £50 for an electric train set which also features characters from Toy Story - you really cannot complain.
The oval of track is standard Hornby sectional track. It has a really good tight fit, and shouldn't work itself loose on a temporary table top layout as the train goes round. The engine and carriages look great, but they do hide a couple of cost-saving points - the bogies are fixed in place and the wheels are a loose fit in the axles allowing them to navigate the curves! But again, what can you expect. In practice, it works fine; no derailments even over points (I've tried on a different circuit). I'm not sure how it would behave on a really complex layout with lots of points and crossings, but that's not what this set is for.
The couplings are not standard, and are a little difficult to put together, requiring firm holding of the two items as you push them together (or pull apart). Having said that, again, they look really good when coupled. But on the downside, you wont be able to use any of these with anything else from the hornby range - but I guess this is missing much of the point of this themed set.
Like all electric trains, the engine does benefit from a gentle running-in. A few laps without rolling stock is recommended. With the 3 carriages connected, the engine can cope easily - an occasional slip of the wheels adds to the fun!
The trackmat looks great, and is a real must if you are running yours on a carpeted floor, to avoid dirt and fluff getting into the mechanism. Ours fits on the dining room table (1st radius curves) - much better for my old-man back.
I bought this originally as an investment, but there are so many lying around in the toy shops it's never going to have the collectable rarity value, so is being used instead (as intended by Hornby!) Next year, we are going to build a wooden curved base so this can run around the Xmas tree. And for £50, is far superior to the battery operated plastic tat that is usually sold for this purpose.
So to summarise, for what it is - an electric Toy Story train set which "looks" full of detail but is robust enough for tiny hands, this really is a good deal. Your kids / grandkids will love it!
