Commuter travel entered a new age during 2009 when the sleek and revolutionary Hitachi Class 395 entered service. This new state of the art train is the fastest commuter train in the UK, with its twin power source motors quickly became the train of choice for those commuters who use the Southeastern service to London every day, saving those in the extremities of the service as much as 30 minutes or more of travel time.
The specially prepared three vehicle model in this set is resplendent in the distinctive blue livery of the prototype and is justifiably named the "Blue Rapier". Additional RailRoad coaches are available to extend the train to a full 6 car unit. Both power and dummy cars have headlights that operate in the direction of travel. The track circuit fits easily on the 1600 x 1270cm MidiMat and by adding Hornby Track Packs and accessory packs can soon be developed into a very effective model railway layout.

Well priced, well packaged "toy". The Blue Rapier is being used as part of a large railway layout. Even though it is at the cheaper end of the market, the detail is very good, with the added bonus of being able to add more coaches as & when.
The train runs smoothly with the track & controller that comes with the set.

Bought this via the Amazon Black Friday promotion that ran recently on the web site and it was reduced to £39.99.
I can't fault the price or the contents at this price, since it was dropped by about £20 from it original price as part of that promotion, however buyers of this set need to be made aware of a few things.
The couplings/connections of each unit to the other is not the standard Hornby connection, this is explained in the instructions/leaflet as being due to the style and format of the rolling stock, so it is not possible to connect the main drive unit, rear unit or the carriage to other Hornby carriages or units, so make sure when you buy additional carriages they have the same form of connection/couplings.
(If you intend to use this on a DCC - Digital Circuit Control - the ability to have more than one locomotive on the track at the same time and control each independently by one controller - read on)
The unit is also NOT DCC ready, despite Amazons web site stating it is, it is however easy to modify and add DCC to it, you can upgrade most of the non-DCC ready locomotives to include DCC but you need to be able to use a soldering iron and follow guides/diagrams from the Hornby web site or other users in forums on how to do this, it is not hard, but if you are bit unsure or not happy to do this yourself you can contact their Repair Centres.
I contacted Hornby via their web site about the fact it was published as DCC ready, they told me initially it was misprinted in the last catalogue, I was allowed to send it to them for 'repair' - which means they would do the modification for me. They would not charge me for the work except for the cost of the DCC units, which retail at about £10-13. You can also source these upgrade boards from other places, and the cheapest I paid was about £8-9. Also note that since the unit has a light in the front of the engine unit and and in the rear unit (non-motorised) and you would need TWO DCC units, as when converting to DCC separate circuit board units are required so the light continues to function correctly in the direction of travel.
If you have any doubts about doing the work, please contact Hornby regarding dropping the engines to them or getting their repair section to help out.
Apart from that, I can not fault the train set, it contains all you need to start your train set, however I did notice at full speed the drive unit goes so fast, it can come off on the curves!!!
Recommended for all ages, including us Big Kids! :D

Very poor Hornby train set
