I bought this product as a Christmas present for my ten year old son.
The impression on unpacking out of the box was highly favourable. The attention to detail on the livery of the coaches and engines was superb. However, this is as good as it got. After assembling the track and connecting the controller nothing happened. The red light was on on the controller but the train wouldn't go around. My son took the set back to his home where he lives with his mother, and his older half-brother, who has similar sets, had a look at it. They were able to get it going by inserting "a piece of metal". Unfortunately, it did not take long for the train to come off the tracks resulting in a broken carriage connection.
Basically, I expect to see a better standard of quality from a major brand like Hornby. The carriage connectors need to be more robust and it is unacceptable that the set failed to perform it's basic function without customisation by the consumer. This is a Pendolino set not a 1970's British Rail train set where, for realism, one could not expect much movement.
I am sure most people will recognise and identify with the disappointment experienced by a ten year old who for months had been asking for this as his main Christmas present. Luckily, 10 year olds seem to have the capacity to move on fairly quickly and he is already asking for The Flying Scotsman as a replacement. I do not know at this time whether I really wish to trust Hornby again!
On a positive note, this is the first time that I have ever returned a purchase to Amazon. They were superb. I was concerned as to how much the return of what is a bulky item would cost. Amazon provided a downloadable return label and even had their courier call to collect. They also refunded the purchase price in a timely and effective manner.
