This set includes a Hornby Midi TrakMat and an oval of track which can be enlarged to a simple but effective layout with the addition of Hornby Track and Accessory Packs.
The romance of the railways in Britain was at its best when hundreds of minor cross-country lines traversed the counties of Britain. In those days, drivers on rural routes such as those found in Devon would encounter unscheduled stops along the line, picking up or dropping off goods as they went from village to village. These trains were often subjects of local humour and given nicknames like "Devon Flyer".

I bought this for my boys (ages 6 and 4). I found the tracks a tad irritating to put together. There were bumps at the joins and the train kept derailing. It really is a starter pack and quite delicate. Needless to say it's now packed up and dumped in the attic for when they get a bit older and calmer. Patience and due care are required to use this toy, so my guess is it's for older boys (and girls). I don't know much about the mechanics of train sets so can't comment on that aspect. What I know is that the train set will fall apart if dropped from a dining table height. Not for boisterous boys.

I am sorry to say like many others the control box gave up with in 4 uses,not really good enough.The track can be a bit fiddly especially when you don,t quite line up the connections.Will have to find a new control box something i wasn,t expecting to do so soon.

My two sons both like going on train jouneys. So I thought I'd buy them a train set. After researching priceing for The 'Flying Scotman' etc train sets, I didn't want to spent £100plus on an extentive set for them not to like it. After looking at buying the train track pieces and trains individually. I thought I'd buy the Devon Flyer.
It's a great little train set to get in to Hornbys and you are not as worried as much if the kids break it, if you have just spent more than £100 on a set

hornby train sets
Easy to set up and operate but limited instuctions regarding wiring if you add trackpacks. Not good for a beginner, which is who these sets are aimed at.
