The most famous locomotive and train in the World features in this high range Hornby train set. The striking LNER apple green liveried Class A1 Flying Scotsman helps to recreate those wonderful days of train travel in the 1930s when the two great rivals, London North Eastern Railway and the London, Midland and Scottish Railway vied for the lucrative passenger traffic between London and Scotland. Included with this set is the Hornby TrakMat which accommodates with ease the large oval of track and two sidings. The larger of the sidings which sits inside the oval can comfortably handle the full train when operations have finished for the day.

I purchased this set for my Grandson(honestly)for christmas, on opening the box set and examining the kit i had truly forgoten the expert craftmanship and quality of Hornby. The minute details and the engineering of the locomotive are excellent, the carriges are superb and the track quality very good. This set is good value for money, i did a lot of shopping around, Amazon was easily the best price. I know my grandson will enjoy it for many years to come (as i will). Well done Hornby I truly recommend this product and you have restored my faith in this type of toy, you simply can't beat quality. . Choo Choo

3.0 out of 5 stars The Flying Scotsman 29 Dec 2009
Durability: 2.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Good value for money train set. However, it is spoilt by the drive motor being in the tender rather than the engine itself. The electrical pick-ups being, one from the engine wheels and one from the tender wheels. The resultant necessary electrical connection mechanism between the engine and the drive tender is weak and easily damaged. Why, if the drive motor has to be in the tender, can't both + and - pick-ups be in the tender?
Also, it is very difficult to replace the screws that hold down the tender cover as this has to be removed for lubrication and cleaning of the motor at regular intervals.

I bought this for my 8 year old son, as i had some as a kid and loved them, as soon as it arrived we built it and he played for hours with it, fantastic, but then the engine died and we had one dissappoineted little boy, but amazon came to the rescue and sent out a new one and collected the faulty one, within 3 days we were back up and running, and it's been perfect ever since.

Bought this as a present and was pleased with it.
It can be a little fiddle setting up but the build is very good on this and it looks great.

A great model. Not suitable for kids under about 8 years though as it is very tricky and needs absolute precision to assemble and correct de-railed trains. Read more
