Product Description

Review

Excellent. There have been a number of books on specific modelling subjects but fewer general books on the subject. This book by Chris Ellis was first published in 2005 and was a sell-out; so, now we have the second edition. The author has many years of practical modelling experience under his belt and is a very experienced writed as well as editing his own magazine. The revised edition includes new additions to the Hornby range, including new rolling stock. The book is Hornby specific in that examples used are from the Hornby range but most of the infomation it contains applies to products of other manufacturers too. The appendix lists magazines that might be helpful and details the Hornby Collectors' Club and the Hornby Virtual Railway Mk2 DVD. There is also a large index. --Pat Hammond, for Model Railway Express, November 2009

Being a brand new model train enthusiast I really need some help at getting started with this very involved hobby and who better to get that advice from than the experts themselves, Hornby. What a terrible disappointment. This book just seems so dated with a hint of a half-hearted attempt at trying to bring it up to date. I used to be a big Marklin fan (German model train company with top notch models and layouts) and their catalogue had great layout designs with lots of tips for scenery making. This is what I was expecting from the Hornby Book of Model Railways. My recommendation? Give this one a miss.

Basically an advertisment for Hornby railways and their stock. Okay, I know that it does say Hornby, but the implication is that it is a bit of a guide to building a model railway that one can use to create something special. This is not the case at all. Whilst each topic is covered - stock, layout, scenery and buildings, there is nothing in any depth that after an initial read hasn't been absorbed. It would be very little use as a reference book for techniques or a book that you would constantly refer back to as required. Nope. This is a simple taster book aimed at young folk who are just getting an itch to build. Well produced and very glossy, but overall, not that useful.

This is a well thought out and informative book. It deals in stages the process of constructing any kind of layout. The describes the history of Hornby model railways, it explaines what kind of track and equipment the get and it deals with small or fairly large layouts. All in all an excellent tome for the beginner and novice alike.

Bought this as a present for a nephew, but couldn't resist having a read through before I gave it!

It has loads of information on planning out your railway, lots of high quality photos and step by step instructions, as well as a history of Hornby and ideas for making your own designs, where to get supplies, and what gauge would be best for you. Recommended for anyone with an interest in model railways.

A must for every beginner. It clears a lot of terms in terms of hobby. In other words concepts behind this hobby are easier to understand. Can be used as a guide line material. The ideas are clear, crisp and concise.

Like the beginning of the book, however as it went on I found it a bit less informative and more about actual layouts that I did not feel were relevant to me
