Amazon.co.uk Review
Based freely on the classic novels by C.S. Forester, Hornblower is a series of TV films following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making.

For television films the production values are very good, though as Titanic, Waterworld and The Perfect Storm demonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that the Hornblower dramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classic Captain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success of Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easy going than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher.

"The Duchess and the Devil" has Hornblower and his men taken prisoners of war.--Gary S Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Young Lt. Horation Hornblower as the Spanish Prisoner, 14 Feb 2003
By A Customer
The only real problem with "The Duchess and the Devil," the third volume in the Emmy-winning A&E mini-series about C.S. Forester's "Horatio Hornblower" is that it comes after the first two. So much happened in those adventures that this one seems relatively tame, but it is still a first-rate episode. As our adventure hopes, Acting Lt. Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd) and seven men capture a small French ship, La Reve. In addition to securing for himself 1000 pounds as his share of the prize money, Horatio is given command of the ship to be sailed to Britain. Traveling with him is the Duchess of Wharfedale (Cherie Lunghi), a very interesting woman who has taken a liking to "Mr. H." However, caught in a thick fog the La Reve finds itself in the middle of the Spanish fleet, now allied with Napoleon and Hornblower has to worry not only about her ladyship and his crew, but the package of vital dispatches he is supposed to delivery to the Admiralty. Forced to trust the Duchess in this crisis, our hero learns that her ladyship is not all she appears to be. Imprisoned by the Spanish on a remote island, Hornblower has an even more surprising discovery in store awaiting him in his new quarters. What happens next is but another chapter in Hornblower's singular devotion to duty and honor setting up a very interesting exchange between our hero and his mentor, Captain Pellew (Robert Lindsay). However, the most impressive part is when Hornblower's men stick by him in a situation where no one expects them to do so. No wonder Hornblower is one of the most admirable creations in literary history. If you stop and think about it then it is obvious Hornblower is just too good to be true, Forester's idealized version of the British seaman. But when you read the stories or watch these episodes it is impossible not to find yourself accepting it all from start to finish. Much of the credit goes to Gruffudd for his performance as Hornblower, but the screenplay by Patrick Harbison deserves to be highlighted as well. The commitment of the actors and director Andrew Grieve to the Hornblower saga, which has already produced one sequel and the promise of many more to come, is a very welcome development.
