One of Darwinism's favorite demonstrations of contemporary evolution is the development of resistance to antibiotics by bacteria. In this book we learn that the most frequent mechanism for this development is the uptake of resistance plasmids, not mutations in genes the bacteria already posess. Even more startling, resistance plasmids often come from dead cells, where they can remain viable. This finding strengthens the likelihood that life from space could play a role in evolution.
With dozens of other well-documented examples, the book confirms the importance of horizontal gene transfer in evolution. The range and the capability of known mechanisms are expanding rapidly. If you're interested in where evolutionary science is headed, check it out!
