One of the best books on film ever,

This review is from: Horizons West: The Western from John Ford to Clint Eastwood (BFI Film Classics) (Paperback)
This focus on a handful of essential filmmakers is most sophisticated and well written from the very beginning to the end. Never losing sight of the topic, this is the most concentrated study on film genre I've ever read. Amazing, too, is the fact, that Jim Kitses never seems dated, though the first edition was published 38(!) years ago. But not only is the writing brilliant, the illustrations, too, are perfectly integrated. This, most certainly, is one of the best books on film ever.

Essential Western Genre study!,

This review is from: Horizons West: The Western from John Ford to Clint Eastwood (BFI Film Classics) (Paperback)
Originally written in 1969 this new and expanded edition of the now classic "HORIZONS WEST" is a must for any serious film scholar or movie buff with a passing or lasting interest in the most american of film genres.
In Horizons West the author gives a detailed account of the most influential westerns from the sound era focusing on the carers of five film directors usually associated with the Western and who have had a profound impact on the genre: John Ford, Anthony Mann, Bud Boetticher, Sergio Leone, and Clint Eastwood. Dedicating lengthy chapters to each one of these director's, Jim Kitses (Professor of Cinema in The San Francisco State University and author of several books and publications includind several by the BFI- British Film Institute)analyses all the westerns directed by these influential directors and their impact in the evolution of the western genre. However it would have been of great value if this book also included essays on the western films of other influential directors, like Howard Hawks, Raoul Walsh, Henry Hathaway, Delmar Daves, and John Sturges but i understand the authors focus on what he belives to be the key directors of the most american of film genres. Horizons West is a must have book in any film library. Essential book to have in a film librarie!
