Product Description

Jack hates tidying up and shoves everything under the bed where, unbeknownest to him, it all fizzles and sizzles and creates a wonderful creature called Horatio. Horatio is a natural leader and gathers all the lost and lonely creatures of the room under the bed - where they create their own world - with rivers, and cities and a place for everyone. But what will happen to Horatio once Jack's mother discovers what is under the bed?

For the under-fives, a poignant and powerful picture book about homelessness and everyone's need for friendship, with stunning, fantastical illustrations from award-winning cartoonist, Chris Riddell.

All the kids love this book. Jack is a typical kid who shoves the mess under the bed and the magic begins. A beautiful land with castles and rivers is created in the mess with Horatio the most welcoming and fuzzy little being . Then mum looks under the bed and ARGHHHHHH Horatio is cast out.Where is Horatio ? Completely different to other kids books we have read which caters to their active imaginations and turns the monster under the bed into a little guy they learn to love. Watch the bottom lip tremble as Horatio disappears and all the other creatures look for him. Lovely alternative illustration with complex line drawings and simple colours. You can really make this live in reading and also use it to discuss being different etc. One we keep coming back to. Worth buying.

Chris Riddell is consistently superb. I have three kids, 9, 5 and 18 months and we love everything he does. This is my 18 month old son's favourite book. He loves the page where Horatio is made in a cloud of magic and dust, and when Horatio is lost, he shouts 'Haysho! Haysho!' until he is found again! We've read it so much we have just had to order a new copy.

Horatio is a magical creature who appears from all the mess a small boy shovels under his bed. He creates magical worlds until one day, the boy's mother decides to clean under the bed and he has to find a new place to live.

A terrific story, with as ever, marvellous illustrations.
