About the Author

Manuel Zeno Gandía (Arecibo, Puerto Rico, 10 de enero de 1855-San Juan de Puerto Rico, 30 de enero de 1930.) Estudió en su ciudad natal y se fue a Madrid donde terminó el bachillerato y la carrera de Medicina. Poco después ejerció su profesión en Guayanilla y Ponce y se inició en la política. Por entonces publicó Horas de soledad y Horas de tristeza. Fue redactor de la Revista de Puerto Rico, fundó el periódico El Estudio y colaboró en otras publicaciones liberales. Zeno publicó su libro de poemas Abismos (1885) y su obra periodística se ocupó de la situación de su país, el sistema administrativo español y la dominación norteamericana. Escribió también relatos, y la novela La charca (1894). Como político fundó el primer Partido Autonomista y participó como delegado en su Asamblea Constituyente celebrada en Ponce en 1887. Tras la anexión de Puerto Rico a Estados Unidos, integró una comisión, junto a Eugenio María de Hostos y Henna, que fue a Washington D.C. para defender ante el presidente William McKinley el derecho de la isla de Puerto Rico a la autodeterminación. Tras ese viaje defendió la soberanía del país en la prensa y esa actividad contribuyó a la fundación del partido Unión de Puerto Rico, en el que militó. Bajo el régimen estadounidense Zeno fue delegado de la Cámara en 1900 y 1907 y fundó, en 1911, el Partido de la Independencia. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

My favourite of the Corneille plays that I've read. Tells the classic tale of the Horatii brothers. Corneille's tragedy best read in the original French.
