5.0 out of 5 stars A hope fulfilled. 4 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Will Oldham has always been the kind of songwriter to either inspire adulation or despair. Either one understands where he is coming from or you do not, and sometimes the obvious lack of any actual tune doesn't help. 'Hope', however, is where the prince actually became aquainted with Mother Tune. It begins with the Neil Young-ish 'Agnes...', which is refreshingly electric and over the next 5 songs only the cover of Cohen's Winter Lady is superfluous. It hardly needs mentioning that the lyrics are wonderful, but then they always are. Forget what the lo-fi elitists say: songs, melody, singing in some kind of is all the better for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars 8.99, rather expensive for a EP (6 songs) 5 Aug 2006
Format:Audio CD
Well, 5 out of six songs are good, which is pretty good figures, all between three and four stars. But as this album is so expensive for an EP, it's 3/5

Agnes... (4/5), the standout track on the EP

Werner's Last Blues...(4/5) Not quite as good as Agnes, just better than All Gone.

All Gone (3.5/5)

Christmas on the Mountain (3/5)

Untitled (3/5)

4.0 out of 5 stars did you like the cake? 3 May 2001

great early-ish palace ep. its got some classic will oldham chestnuts, 'all gone','untitled', and the recording quality is eerie and fits the mood of the songs. the werner herzog nod shows will has cool friends. appropriate drumming and organ swells abound. its kinda like a dylan on absinthe thing, to painfully filter an artist through the metaphor of another one. a good palace starting place. i too bonded with/was crushed by this album on a lonely bus ride. listen to this album until the songs arent sad anymore, then you know its great.

Just like Mountain, this mini album is one of very high quality. Enjoy it, play it over and over, and it can make your day. God save Will Oldham!

will oldham's falsetto is just right here, not too wavery, which is just right for the instrumentation (liamhayes' piano is nice indeed). the length too is good, and the leonard cohen nod appropriate/reciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't get better depression than this 4 Sep 2000
By Bryce A. Sibley - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Will Oldham has become old hat by now, but this EP is truly fantastic (rivalling URGE Overkill's "Stull EP" as the best EP of the 90's). All the songs just flow together. It is the perfect thing to listen to while riding on a lonley bus on a cold and wet February day.

2.0 out of 5 stars Feigning grit 20 Dec 2008
By IRate - Published on
Format:Audio CD
When first gaining prominence as a solo artist, perhaps too many of us fell for something that was not entirely there. I know those are often my thoughts when sifting through the inordinate back catalog I invested into this rather manipulative, lazy artist. It is completely apparent on EP's like these that the songwriting is obnoxiously dull and simply disguised with consciously frazzled vocals and apparent production authenticity in order to mask the uninspired mediocrity of it all.
