I found this an absorbing account of 20th century ideological follies and admirably objective in its appraisal of communism vs fascism. It wanders off slightly towards the end into a critique of liberal interventionism, esp. in the former Yugoslavia, which although instructive to people like me who never quite understood what those late 20th century wars were all about, doesn't really back up his argument against totalitarianism. Surely it was the very downfall of totalitarianism and the rise of democracies in the Balkans that re-ignited all those ethnic tensions?
