Despite there currently being no reviews for this vacuum, I decided to take the risk of ordering it due to it being made by the well known brand Hoover. After all, at £50 for a 2200 watt vacuum by a respected company I couldn't go wrong...surely?

Before I continue I just want to say that we only have one short-haired cat in the house, so this product is clearly aimed at someone with more pet hair issues than I have.

To firstly describe the vacuum:
It has an adjustable suction control which is extremely powerful when on `max', sucking up my carpet in places when no brush heads are attached (see below for more on brush heads). The electric cord is a decent length, so I could vacuum all my stairs without having to unplug it half way - however being a cylinder vacuum I still had to carry the actual vacuum up with me. My last vacuum cleaner was this cylinder style (rather than an upright) so I obviously realised I'd have to carry the cleaner with me but I was surprised at how light this is. Unfortunately this is where the positives end.

Moving on to the attachments....the vacuum comes with the usual plastic tube coming out of the main body, into which an extendable metal tube attaches. On the end you have the choice of 3 brush heads:

1) a smaller than usual crevice tool - in fact I've never seen one this small and difficult to use. To make matters worse it has an even smaller swivel brush attached to it, which you push round to transform the rubbish crevice tool into an even more rubbish miniscule brush head. What on earth the purpose for this is I can only guess....teeny tiny amounts of dusting perhaps?

2) a standard flat wide brush head, which has two positions - high or low - designed for different lengths of carpet pile. On the low setting this brush failed to pick up properly - unless I went over the same spot 5 or 6 times. On the high setting everything got stuck on the brush/bristles and didn't go up the vacuum pipe at all - instead when it had collected too much on the bristles it dumped it all on the carpet in one blob, so I then had to take the brush head off and just use the pipe to suck the mess up. Once I'd repeated this process several times I got pretty annoyed I can tell you.

3) a `Pet Hair Remover Turbo Brush' - at last I'd found the bee's knees! This is why this vacuum is aimed at 'Pets'- when I first used this brush I thought it was great. It has a fast action spinning barrel, so instead of just sucking (like the other brush heads) this one spins and sucks. It's this very spinning/sucking action that makes this vacuum strong enough to pick up pet hair. Fantastic, I loved it! Until it stopped spinning - about 2 minutes after I started using it. At first I thought - surely it's not jammed already? I checked it and pulled little (and I mean little) bits of hair out of it, then tried again. This time it stopped working within 3 seconds. Next time, nothing. It had broken on first use.

I had a vacuum cleaner advertised for `pets' which had brushes that were incapable of actually sucking up any pet hair at all. And remember, I only have one short-haired cat!

In essence brushes 1 & 2 are not up to the job in any shape or form and brush 3 (the important one) broke on first use. So I was left to vacuum the house without a single brush head on the pipe - which meant I was crawling around on my hands and knees, soon getting backache. In desperation I'd even tried to fit my old brush heads from my ancient (but very dead) Vax cylinder vacuum cleaner - sadly they didn't fit.

So in summary I certainly can't fault the 2200 watt power and suction level of this vacuum cleaner, but Mr Hoover, why oh why ruin this product with such poor quality, gimmicky brush heads? Surely they are the cheapest part and thus the easiest to get right?

I've returned this vacuum for a refund and am now unlikely to purchase a Hoover product ever again.

Another item bought for my friend's new flat, but it has had a 'test drive' and certainly whips up the pet hairs far better than other manufacturers so-called pet hair removers. I recommend this product!
