Product Description

Product Description

Hooverdam is a solo album recorded in 2010 at Grammy-winning producer Liam Watson's famous analogue studio in East London, Toe Rag Studios where the White Stripes recorded Elephant. It includes the hit Please Don t Put Me On A Slow Boat Trowbridge. The album was considered a return to form and was sufficiently noteworthy that author Chris Wade wrote a book just about this album and it s recording. Hugh toured widely in support of Hooverdam by playing the album in it s entirety on the the UK legs, and touring the USA twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugh goes back to basics 17 Dec 2008
Format:Audio CD
This is a rock n roll album by Hugh. After the mellow Beyond Elysian Fields, Hugh and his band come back with a fine no nonsense rock album. Highlights for me are Rain on the River, Slowboat to Trowbridge and Bangin On. This album is well worth checking out. Hugh's back to his best!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great threesome 21 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was bought on the basis of seeing Hugh and his band at the BasFest in Essex, despite his attempts to encourage the crowd to download the album for free. The DVD which comes with this very decently priced 2 disc album adds to the "live" experience, as many tracks are played live in the studio. Caroline Campbell who plays bass on the album (and backing vocals) is one of the best live bass players I have ever seen. The CD may not quite do her justice, but the DVD does more so. The album itself is more like a rocking Stranglers album, but without keyboards. Again, if you see Caroline live, you will know why a keyboard player is not required. For the album though, I think keyboards would have possibly made this into a 5 star "Stranglers-like" album. A very good album, but maybe not as good as Hi Fi or Beyond Elysian Fields.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw Rock 22 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
The music industry seems to be run by executives who think they know what the public want, or think they have to tell the public what they want. Hugh Cornwell is in the enviable position of being able to completely bypass and ignore those executives and produce music that HE wants to make. Consequently, Hooverdam is a collection of raw rock music that harks back to the punk era from which Hugh and The Stranglers emerged, without actually being punk rock.

This entire album has been available for free download from Hugh's website since its release, but of course, with this set, you get live versions on the DVD as well. personally, I like the idea of a "physical" album complete with disc and sleeve art rather than downloads. So I downloaded it to check it out and then bought the album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hugh's best in a long time 5 Dec 2009
Format:Audio CD
For the first time in ages HC has released an album in which he seems to be having a bit of fun whilst playing, and the result is a marked improvement on other recent albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Cornwell's on form and happy! 13 Dec 2008
By spike
Format:Audio CD
Kept playing Hugh Cornwell's latest album "Hooverdam" on repeat as its such a quality hard rocking album in places that is reminescent of The Kinks and The Who as each track bar the good instrumental "Philip K Riduclous" are simple and catchy enough to warrant a few repeated plays notably "Please Don't Put Me on the slow boat to trowbridge" and "Delightful Nightmare" which illustrates the effectiveness of being in a bad of three people as the quality of Caroline Campbell's bass playing matches the sublime guitar thrills of Hugh Cornwell's instrument backed up with solid drumming by Chris Bell.

The good thing about this album is that its not let down by any attempts at experimenting just Hugh sticking to the tried and tested formula of keeping things simple for us to remain interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars cool song writing 9 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
forgot what a great songwriter Hugh is, great to come across a well written album that has not been "hyped" onto the market. Up the reality-tv talentless rubbish, check this out.
