Book Description

6 Jun 2013

From Cerys Matthews, radio 6 DJ, ex-singer of Brit Pop band Catatonia and one of Britain's best known music devotees, comes Hook, Line and Singer, a sing-a-long book for all the family, for any occasion

After more than thirty years of singing, travelling and collecting songs, Cerys Matthews still finds there's no better way to spend time than singing along in good company.

In Hook, Line and Singer she invites you to join her in a grand old singalong. From songs for young families through tunes for vintage-lovers, trips away, American favourites and songs for times of optimism, ending with celebration songs for Christmas and New Year, this is a book filled with Cerys's own memories and musical arrangements. A mix of the traditional and contemporary, Hook, Line and Singer presents music and lyrics clearly so the book can be sung as well as read, offering you the stories behind the songs, their ages and origins, and the reason for their inclusion.

This is a life-affirming book of the most memorable, melancholy, silliest and easiest-to-sing songs that Cerys knows, designed to keep handy at home for those moments when only a song will do.

Cerys Matthews is a singer, songwriter, author and broadcaster, hosting a popular weekly radio show on BBC6 Music and appearing on The Voice with Tom Jones. A collector of songs for over thirty years, she has also written and presented documentaries on subjects such as Blue Horizon (the iconic British blues label), Sacred Harp singing and Dylan Thomas. A columnist for the number one world music magazineSonglines, she is the author of children's stories Tales from the Deep and Gelert, A Man's Best Friend. She was lead singer and songwriter for the multi-million-selling band Catatonia, and duets with Sir Tom Jones on the perennial winter favourite, 'Baby, It's Cold Outside'. She lives in West London with her children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific !! 14 Jun 2013
Format:Hardcover
Well researched and a totally infectious book , great illustrations and as expected of a real musician like Cerys , the songs are practically laid out and I can follow the tunes without being able to read but basic music .
I knew a lot of the songs but it's the exotic and more obscure ones that have really taken me and my mates voices to task . Just seen a review saying the book falls apart , send it back , my copy is withstanding serious abuse as our student household fights over it to get the next song started . If you ever get to read this Cerys , thank you , a great book and great idea having the stories behind the songs , we are taking it down the pub tonight to get a mass sing along . Class , every home / pub / family should have one !

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the Ukulele out! 29 Jun 2013
By Ms. Felicia Davis-burden VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is a great treasure chest of fun for all ages. I share Cerys Matthews's enthusiasm for singing an impromptu song when the mood takes me, or if the occasion fits. Looking through the simple melody arrangements of many songs, I think that the best way to approach the songs if you feel you're not musical is to remember how they had been sung to you, or how you heard them around you. Many of the melodies are simply suggested, not set in stone - but the chords are a helpful memory jogger if you do play an instrument. I only took up the ukulele last year and already handle enough chords to get through at least a dozen songs in this book. Actually, I didn't realise just how brilliant and eclectic this collection was until I tuned up my uke and started winging it!

I must say that it's a real treat to be reminded of classics such as 'Little Boxes' (my dad used to sing this to me when I was small) and 'Nellie the Elephant' (a 'Junior Choice' staple!) My version of the playground favourite 'Worm Song' is more bloodthirsty than Cerys's! I share her fond memory of Saturday mornings spent hogging the television, watching the Monkees and the Banana Splits Show ('Tra la la, Tra la la la!)

However, I have a complaint. 'Greensleeves' is far easier to play in A minor. I can fingerpick my ukulele and sing it quite passably, but in this book we find a B minor mess! Never mind: There are lots more treats such as 'I Like Bananas', 'Lambeth Walk', 'Eviva Espana', 'Goodnight Irene', 'Windmill in Old Amsterdam'.

This is a delightful book for anyone to sing. Thank you Cerys!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Song Book 23 Aug 2013
By Mr. R. J. Wyndham VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I enjoy Cerys' Sunday morning music show on BBC 6Music, so was keen to see her book.

It is well set out, and although primarily intended as a song book, it is actually fairly readable.

When my 2 year grand daughter visited I got out my old guitar and we had an enjoyable 30 minutes having a joint sing along with me mostly remembering how to play the chords. I've also lent it to a friend who teaches guitar at our local primary school, and he reported back that he had a very pleasant couple of hours looking through the songs - remembering old favourites and deciding which would be suitable to teach his class.

So a fun book that would be a great present for a friend who plays (or used to play) guitar, ukulele or keyboards, and wants a nostalgia session or entertain children or grand children.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great walk down the musical memory lane! 27 Aug 2013
By S. A. Broadhurst VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
My job is that of an Activity Worker, in a city council run Children's Centre. I work with families who have children aged 0 - 5 years. In every session that I am a part of, songs and rhymes play a part. They are important as they attract a child's attention, teaches them about words and rhyme, encourages interaction, expectation and enjoyment. The use of actions encourages movement and co-ordination and as the children get older it aids language development and can include numbers, counting and turn taking. They are just as important for parents and other carers who gain confidence in groups and in also helping their children with their language and development.

When I saw this book I knew it would be perfect for my job. I know the traditional rhymes and some of the alternative versions but am always on the look out for new rhymes and songs to teach the groups.

The book is all about song and rhyme. The author, Cerys Matthews, female lead of pop group Catatonia, has collected together lots of songs and rhymes which together make for a fantastic sing-a-long. There are traditional tunes along with modern day songs which children and adults of all ages with enjoy, recognising many but I am sure all will learn a few new songs to add to their repertoire.

The songs are split into eleven chapters: Action Songs; If You're Happy and You Know It; Oh Dear, What Can The Matter Be?; Nan's Tune Emporium; Let's Go Fly A Kite; Monoglots to Polygots; La, La, La, La, La, L'America; Sea Dogs and Blue Water; Creature Songs; Sweet Dreams; and Christmas and New Year. Each chapter has 10-12 songs in each. All songs have brief introduction to the song, a little of its history and include those little gems of facts which could be a winning answer in a pub quiz!
