A man without honour is no man at all . . .
France, 1636. The Thirty Years War rages across Europe, and a bloody and brutal campaign begins as Spanish armies flood into Picardy.
In their way lies the border village of Dax-en-roi. The Chevalier de Roland rallies a valiant defence, but his household guard are slaughtered, his estate burned and his life forfeit. Only one survivor escapes the invaders' butchery: the Chevalier's son, and lone heir to the Roland name. But André de Roland is little more than a boy. What can someone so young do against so many?
Yet Andre is determined to save his people from the savagery of their invaders. He will uphold the honour of the Roland name - to the death!
Honour and the Sword is a sweeping and epic novel of love and heroism, betrayal and courage in the fine tradition of Alexandre Dumas.

A TERRIFIC READ! From the moment I picked this book up I couldn't put it down. I didn't know anything much about this period of history before I started but this didn't matter at all as it was clear that the book has been meticulously researched and, of course, now I want to find out more! The first-person narration of the novel works really well and it makes you care about the characters; I also found the description of the sword-fighting particularly convincing. Stefan's character is especially intruiging - his rough and brutal exterior seems to be hiding some deep feelings - I'm looking forward to finding out what will happen when he and Andre meet again...I can't wait till the sequel to find out!

Readers are always looking for something a little different in the Historical Fiction genre. Whilst many will delve into Roman or the Norse what AL brings to the fore is a novel with the daring do of the Musketeers, in a modern tale that contains touches of Dumas with combat that could easily have been written by Gemmell or Cornwell. Its addictive, its beautifully researched and a tale that you'll have a hard time to put down. Add to the mix characters that have a touch of Flashman alongside discovering that the author plays for keeps and its an offering to shout from the rooftops.

A most excellent first novel,
This review is from: Honour and the Sword (Paperback)
Seeing as the literary market is now beyond saturation with the subject of ancient Rome, I thought I would give another era a bash, and overall, I was not disappointed. Let's get the one or two irritations out of the way first. The style in which the book is written does take some getting used to - and the fictional Edward Morton is an unecessary convolution. I'm not sure I agree also with the use of modern parlance - the phrase "sort of" seems entirely out of context - and does get rather tiresome after continuous use. My biggest bugbear, though, is an English author using an atrocious Americanism by substituting "s" for "z" - apoligize, realize, etc. Ggggrrrrrr!!Those things aside, the substance of the book - ie - the story - and the superb characterisation - are what makes this worth reading. The reader really does get a sense of the brutality of war and enemy occupation - and the hand-to-mouth existence of the protagonists is striking and relentless. Andre is a character born out of pure idealism (at one point I was sure he would sprout a pair of wings and fly to the rescue), however, it is Jacques and Stefan who are the heart and soul of this book. Despite the one or two little glitches, I give this book five stars for a rivetting story, and very much look forward to the second book in the series.
