Product Description

When starfighter pilot Simon Dodds is enrolled in a top secret military project, he and his wingmates begin to suspect that there is a lot more to the theft of a legendary battleship and the Mitikas Empire's civil war than the Helios Confederation is willing to let on. Somewhere out there the Pandoran army is gathering, preparing to bring ruination to the entire galaxy...

--

The Second Edition of THE HONOUR OF THE KNIGHTS is a rewrite of the original 2009 novel, offering greater insight into the beginnings of the Pandoran War, extended chapters and more in-depth characterisation, as well as new and re-imagined scenes, all the while retaining the same epic storyline.

---

"A tightly plotted action-adventure yarn with a good mix of likeable, interesting and nasty characters" - SF Crowsnest.com (on Honour of the Knights (First Edition))

"Written with perspicacity and drive, with a strong voice and good attention to detail [...] a convincing space opera, written with a distinct style. Recommended." - SFBook.com (on Honour of the Knights (First Edition))

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start, blistering finish. 17 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Note: This review is for the Second Edition, which has none of the problems apparently afflicting the first edition.

I have a thing for good science-fiction; Having been immersed in the dark ultra-gothic Warhammer 40K universe for more than twenty years, I'm more than capable of suspending disbelief on even the most far fetched premise. As long as the premise isn't entirely ludicrous, and is well told, I'll happily accept it into the tale I'm reading. That's the whole point of any fiction.

This, unfortunately, rules a lot of sci-fi out for me. Very few I've read in the last months have managed to blend science, fiction, and story telling into any sort of cohesive format. That includes some of the big name authors such as Peter F Hamilton.

So I'm both relieved and thankful to report that Stephen Sweeney has managed to cover all the bases with this one - we've got science, we've got fiction, good characters, excellent plot, and well paced writing. One of the nice things about the story is the originality; there are some plot devices which have come straight from the 'how to write sci-fi' handbook, but they're dealt with in an original or unusual manner. Almost entirely devoid of swearing and sex too, which was a pleasant surprise for the genre. Another surprise for the genre is the total lack of 'heroic-extras' - the entirely random bit-part players who pull off incredible acts just to propel the plot along. Better edited than most of the sub £2 sci-fi titles too.

Purely personal and very subjective, but there were a few bits which I think could have improved it even more for me; a bit more science (although purely personal). More background on more of the characters - a bit more on Enrique to balance out with the others.

I bought this because it was cheap, not expecting too much. It was great, lots of action but a good plot, realistic characters, some of them I wanted to slap. A satisfactory ending that filled gaps and answered questions. Now I am going to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great book 10 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a great book, a "fleshed out" version of the first edition.
Although I knew the story, I could not stop reading this version.
Highly recomended, even though I gave the first edition five stars, this was much better.
It did not "drag" at the start, like the first edition, well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars very interesting if mildly incoherent in parts 19 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this 2nd edition, but haven't read the first. The plot is imaginitive and detailed, but characters and motivations aren't always coherent or well defined. Recommended if you enjoy space opera sci-fi but could have been better edited for a 2nd ed, just about to buy the sequel...
