Review

Voula's experience as a psychologist is evident in the way she expertly gets under the skin of the characters she portrays. One is hooked from the first page, the twists and turns of the plot keep you guessing right up to the end. --Leonie Mellinger, communication skills coach

Voula Grand's work combines a raw emotional honesty with a psychologist's insight into the human psyche. This novel is at once a real page-turner and a highly original portrait of the nature of betrayal. A must-read. --Jacqui Lofthouse, author of Bluethroat Morning

A tale woven with twists and turns and compelling characters. You won't be able to put it down. --Vanessa Woolley, Presenter, Marlow FM Book Club

Product Description

Honor's Shadow is a contemporary tale of betrayal and revenge. Honor and Madalena were rivals for the love of Thomas when they were young. Now middle aged, their paths have crossed again, awakening old feelings of rivalry and vengeance. Both women struggle to maintain control, as their lives become intertwined once more.A series of events (a painful anniversary, a new psychotherapy client, a photo of Madalena's daughter in a newspaper), have awakened disturbing memories in Honor. Through her work with Tisi, her strange new client, and her memory of a painful betrayal, she tries to work out what is driving her own unusual behaviour. Her efforts to contain the vengeful impulses of both Tisi and herself are failing. An old Greek myth provides a chance to prevent disaster; and ultimately reveals to Honor the drive behind her own desire for revenge.Honor's Shadow is a fable for our times, touching both lightly and deeply on the profound emotional issues that can ignite our worst fears.

5.0 out of 5 stars unpeeling betrayal a layer at a time 28 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Most books that deal with the same subject matter as Honor's Shadow - betrayal, revenge, obsession - tend to be black and white about it, forcing a rigid moral framework onto these most complex of emotional states. Voula Grand cleverly manages to avoid this, using her psychology background to create characters who are human in their flaws. At the book's centre is a relationship where past transgressions have been dealt with, but not quite left behind so they flare up at the slightest trigger. Honor, the protagonist, is a psychotherapist confronted with a client whose story of betrayal has uncomfortable parallels to Honor's own life. In responding to her client, she must also respond to the unresolved issues in her own past. An intriguing, well written first novel about the fragility of human relationships, and the unforeseen repercussions of the choices that we make.

5.0 out of 5 stars A psychological drama 16 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
In their youth Honor and Madalena, now middle aged, were once rivals over Thomas and now the past has come back to haunt them. A contemporary story of betrayal and revenge, this is a page-turning read which, due to the strength of the characterisation, digs in deep and stay with you. Great for bookgroups too, with plenty to discuss!

I loved this book. There is a really gripping story about betrayal revenge and pent up anger. Feelings which can gnaw at your soul without your actually realizing it. Voula's characters are completely different between themselves but each of them have their own inner turmoils which through the story are revealed. Honor the psychologist, apparently balanced, adult and in control has her inner self thrown in a turmoil after an encounter with a patient and a newspaper article. These events churn up really old ghosts from the past and she loses control and behaves almost like one of her patients.
Madalena on the other hand is at face value a superficial trophy wife, but she also has a story behind her which comes out in the course of the book and is in fact a very solitary and sad story. Although the story can be read at face value as an intriguing novel, it provokes thought and when you put it down your find yourself thinking about relationships, emotions and question what and how you would react in these situations (if you have not been unfortunate enough to experience them first hand).
I would definitely recommend this novel, it is a book you will want to read more than once and your will find new food for thought each time.

4.0 out of 5 stars intriguing 16 Oct 2011
Format:Hardcover
I found this book of betrayal very hard to put down and particularly the storyline about Magdalena who was a most interesting character. Not my usual type of reading but it held my interest all the way through and I do congratulate the author on opening my eyes to different subjects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page turner 5 May 2013
By KitKat
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A brilliantly written book that makes the reader experience the characters emotional journey to the fullest and which provides a great insight into the work of psychiatrists and therapists.
Honor has been betrayed twice, will a serious of events and a new disturbing client finally make her take revenge? Madalena chose security over being her own person will she loose it all? Tisi is being devoured by her fury, will she find peace? 3 very different characters who nevertheless made me like them all. i am still wondering what happened all those years ago with Thomas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging from the beginning to the end 14 April 2013
Format:Paperback
When a friend suggested reading this book I must confess I wasn't very excited. All of a sudden my friends were loving it so I started as well.
It gets you engaged from the very beginning, you can feel the characters, understand their thoughts, fears and illusions.
The plot is fantastically developed and the stories well connected with each other.
I loved it all through and I have already recommended it to other friends who were thrilled after reading too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant 5 April 2013
By Dagmar
Format:Paperback
I was genuinly impressed by the book. Once I started I could not put it down. It had me hooked and I had to find out how the story unfolded.
Voula has brilliantly managed to bring her characters to life, all very different but all described with such depth and empathy. The story is complex but perfectly worked out and there was no obvious ending.
I would recommend this book without hesitation. Definitely worth the read!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!! 3 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I can't pray author, Voula Grand, enough for writing this magnificent story.

From the minute I started, I was hooked. Intelligent, provoking writing, that make you think at last!! I've been waiting for a novel that could challenge the way I think, see things and I found all this and more with Honor's Shadow. What I also liked about this book is that, although, there is plenty written out there about betrayal and revenge, this felt different, it felt current, fresh, new!
All the characters are interesting which is something I do also always find difficult to get from other books.

I loved, loved loved this book! Can't recommend it enough and the best thing is that I have read somewhere that this is a Trilogy and I believe the second book is on its way!!! Yehiiiii :)
