Product Description

To some men honor is just a word….

Jeannette Boucher, a young French beauty from a family left penniless by the revolution, must marry against her will to save them all from ruin. But almost immediately after the vows are spoken, she learns that her old English husband is impotent—and in his desire for an heir, he plans to compromise her in the worst way.

Determined to escape such a fate, she stows away on one of His Majesty’s frigates. But a woman alone is in constant danger.

To Lieutenant Treynor, honor means everything….

Born a bastard to a wayward marquise, Lieutenant Crawford Treynor was given to a poor farmer to raise and was maltreated until he ran away to join the Royal Navy. Treynor is determined to prove he’s as good as any other man and rise to captain his own frigate. But once he finds Jeannette aboard The Tempest he must decide whether to return her to the man he knows would abuse her—or risk everything, even his life, to keep her safe.

What an excellent story. I was gripped from beginning to end especially of the descriptions of life aboard a naval ship during the French Revolutionary war.

The Bastard 29 Nov 2011
By Joanne
Format:Kindle Edition
'The Bastard' by Brenda Novak is a historical romance set in 1794. What a gripping read! The descriptions about life on board a navy frigate in the eighteenth century are very realistic (or as realistic as I would imagine - no I wasn't there to see for myself) showing how hard, dirty, smelly and dangerous life was. I loved how Brenda wrote the love story and how she developed the characters throughout.

Brenda Novak is known more for her romantic suspense books but I hope she continues with historical romance as she definitely shouldn't be pigeonholed. I look forward to reading more of this author's work as I love her writing style.

I couldn't read this book quick enough!!

I almost felt as though I was watching a film as I was reading this book, it was that descriptive and vivid. The book instantly grabbed me into the storyline and moved very rapidly, I found myself completely engrossed in the book and instantly took a liking to Jeannette and was willing her to escape the Baron. I was relieved when she stumbled across Lieutenant Treynor and thought that she had found safety. I loved the time they spent on the ship and the action lasted right until the end. The scenes were very descriptive and I felt as though I was right there with them. I thought the settings and the way the characters behaved were as they should be for the period that they were set in and the author did it brilliantly.

Definitely one to be added to your reading list.

I loved the ending too, I don`t want to give away too much but it had me smiling, it has however left me wondering whether or not there will be sequel?!
