CD Description

We at AVID never dreamt we would be releasing an Essential Collection with the following motley crew of artists...... Knuckles O'Toole, Joe Fingers Carr, Crazy Otto, Sir Hubert Pim alongside such relatively normal fellow artists as Del Ward, Jan August and Edward Rubach! Such is the crazy world we have entered into with our latest release the splendidly re-mastered Essential Honky Tonk & Sparkling Piano Collection. Of course these crazy names were often pseudonyms for more highly respected pianists who wanted to get in on the latest craze, step forward Billy Rowland, Dick Hyman (still alive and making music in his eighties!) and Lou Busch! But we say thank heavens for the reassuring names of the Queen of Honky Tonk, Winifred Atwell and the ever smooth Russ Conway. Both are also featured here and were undoubtedly the two biggest stars in this perhaps rather overlooked genre. We cover 58 tracks on our selection including some big one hit wonders, more than enough to get even the most staid of feet tapping along. Enjoy!

This new 2 CD compilation by Hugh Palmer is a real winner. Firstly, there is the variety of performers and secondly their unique styles. Add to that 58 tracks that include 7 medleys (Winifred Atwell; Russ Conway & Knuckles O'Toole) and a gigantic running time of 155 minutes. The sound quality is excellent and the atmosphere created is one of the happiest I've heard in a long while. The title of the collection really does the music justice and the honky tonk plays loud and clear with the injection of sparkle just like at a party from the past. The collection is nostalgic and there are so many tunes to recall. A real winner.

By Barry McCanna TOP 50 REVIEWER

There was a time when any public house worthy of the name sported a piano in the public bar, and at least one customer capable of beating the living daylights out of it! Those days alas are long gone, and pubs themselves have become an endangered species, so this splendid compilation is a reminder of what we've lost. It's a glorious wallow in the fifties, when Winifred Atwell and Russ Conway had hit records and were frequently featured on television. They are well represented here, together with the two Joes ("Fingers" Carr and "Piano" Henderson, that is), Crazy Otto, Andy "Plymouth " Rocke, Dick Hyman and Billy Rowland (both of whom went under the splendid pseudonym of Knuckles O'Toole) Emil Stern, Johnny Maddox, Sir Hubert Pimm, and Frankie Froeba. I'm pleased that Hugh Palmer has cast the net wider to include less obvious proponents of the keyboard, Jan August and Edward Rubach. Great sound and great value.

Something of a first 25 April 2012

Though there've been many collections of honky tonk music there's never been so many in one place and this takes in a 20 year period with the obvious to the obscure. Many names camouflaged the real artist who was in many cases a bandleader.Rarely anthologised though is the Francis Craig Orchestra who had the first hit -and probably only hit- on the Nashville based Bullet label in 1948.Amazingly missed from all the Bullet compilations this was only ever reissued on a Jasmine CD of 40s Big Band music even though the Craig ork was known as a Society band
A grave ommission however is Jo Ann Castle was with the Lawrence Welk Show and the Dixiebelles with Cornbread & Jerry who had the hit singles Down At Papa Joes and Southtown USA in 1963/4
