Bottle and Brains 2 Oct 2011
By The Wolf TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Jesse (The Devil) Hughes takes a sidestep from his day job with
Eagles Of Death Metal to deliver a collection of uber-fun stuff
with his flashy, trashy solo debut 'Honkey Kong'. He pillages the
sounds of the sixties and seventies and shakes off the dust to
make them his own. He does it with buckets of panache and humour.
Put 'Oh Girl' on at a party and you may well find your guests
bouncing off the ceiling! The four-to-the-floor-beat, grinding
guitar and infectious yelping chorus raises the bar for pastiche.

Elsewhere on these ten glittery pop-rock tracks Mr Hughes leaves
us with no doubt that BIG FUN is the order of the day but the
shiny surfaces notwithstanding there is also a shrewd musical
intelligence at work here. The guy knows how to put together a
good tune as well as work the room! Here and there I was reminded
of some of The Tubes finest moments (there are echoes too of singer
Fee Waybill's voice) in the cannily synthetic arrangements, daft
lyrics and numerous rich reverential nods and winks to the past.

There is much to admire and enjoy. The sleezy-cheesy rock and roll
of opening track 'Complexity'; the stomp and strut of 'Boots Electric
Theme' (featuring snarling cheerleader backing vocals from Juliette
Lewis and Brody Dalle on fine form); the affectionate tub-thumping
strains of the Phil Spector-ish composition 'No Ffun'; the Frank
Zappa soundy-likey 'Trippy Bob' and the hokey laugh-out-loud kitsch-
country barn dance shenanigans of closing song 'Swallowed By The Night'.

'Honkey Kong' has got both bottle and brains. I smiled until my face ached!

Recommended.
