5.0 out of 5 stars Ice cooool - from start to finish. 10 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
Sublime watery ambient dubby techno-y stuff. Hongkong is Mr. Henke's first LP release as Monolake and quite a stunning set it is (although considering this is a Chain Reaction release, how could it be otherwise?).

The opening watery blips of Cyan, the slightly stuttered dubby movement of Lantau, to the absolutely satisfying and dreamy outro of Mass Transit Railway, this is ambi/idm of the first order and it gets better with every Monolake release.

Amazon.co.uk are missing out the excellent "Interstate," and really aught to add it to their catalogue, because it is as equally essential as Hongkong. Other recommended listening: anything by Bola (less of the soundscapes, more of the watery melodica), Vladislav Delay, and Wolfgang Voigt (Gas).

5.0 out of 5 stars Monolake - Hongkong 22 Feb 2011
By scoundrel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Monolake's Hongkong album is an impressive journey, warm and fantastic. The opening track, "Cyan," starts with ambient noise, like a recording of an insect farm, and glides seamlessly into a deep, minimalism, while "Index" is slightly darker and harder. If you're in the mood for some quiet breaks and dubbed out synths, "Lantau" is the way to go; if you prefer the dubbiness but want a slow house rhythm, then you can't go wrong with "Macau." "Arte" is nothing but deepness, and "Occam," though it starts with indecipherable chatter, quickly moves into a rhythmic groover. The final track, "Mass Transit Railway," is a train of ambience, slowly pulling out of the station. Get on board before it's too late.

One of the few House-inflected electronic acts that strives to innovate instead of dumb-down, this early debut collection already showed an assuredly throbbing template firmly in place for maximum future flow production.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sit back and drift 6 April 2000
By tom - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Anyone who releases a CD single that lasts for 37 minutes gets my respect.... With its blissed out textures interwoven with washing lead sounds, Hong Kong represents an intelligent exploration of distant beats. If you like music that evolves slowly over time and concentrates on the manipulation of sound rather than rhythm, then this could be for you. I rarely get past the first track if I listen to this in bed.
