Having been a regular visitor to Hong Kong for many years I've always eagerly anticipated publication of the latest edition of the Lonely Planet guide. The latest guide published February 2010 is the 14th edition and I've previously purchased all but the first ever edition. This is a well written and fairly comprehensive guide which will be useful to anyone visiting HK for the first time. However a couple of disappointing aspects are that too much of the information in the guide is out of date or incorrect, the maps are of poor quality and in my opinion the general standard of the guide has declined over the last couple of editions. Anybody looking to find the General Post Office "just west of the Star Ferry Pier" (not since 2006), or take a boat from Queens Pier (dismantled 2008), or find Admiralty Station on the Central Line (no such line exists) or take a ferry from Tuen Mun to the airport (not since about 2006) or obtain a 7-day border visa for Shenzhen (5 days) or take green minibus 24A will be disappointed and there are numerous other errors. The MTR system map provided with the pull-out "Hong Kong & Macau City Map" is years out of date and still makes reference to the Kowloon-Canton Railway which lost its identity in 2007. If you already have either on the last couple of editions of the guide then there's little point in investing this latest edition.

We were a bit disappointed with this book. There were quite a few restaurants and museums that have closed down and the way the maps and restaurants are listed it is hard to find them on the maps. We wouldn't buy it again.

Decent enough I hope! 18 Nov 2010

Not been to HK on this trip yet so can't see how good it really is. Map at back looks ok, but scale for macau says 5km, when it means 500m! Also this map is missing many street names, which are shown on the similar map within the book.

Don't know why, but I find the maps in Rough Guide easier to read than the internal ones in the LP.

For those on budget the drinking options do not seem good - there should be a key, similar to that for the eating section, so that we know how expensive a place is likely to be. All the bars seem to be of the 'trendy' type, not cheap.

I have not found info on transport from Macau airport to town.

Would always find it easier, if in the main text, along with the reference to the page the map is on, they should say the actual number of the thing (sight, pub, cafe etc) that it correlates to on the map. This would mean that we dont need to go from main text, to key, to map. Many books have this issue though.

In general the book is thorough, and has more than enough info in for the 5 day trip we are planning. I really like the walking tour suggestions. I like the fact that sights are linked geographically, but more indication to as whether the sight is a must see etc would be good. One book does a star rating by each site, which is great for just doing the main attractions.

Last time I used the Rough Guide to SE Asia and the Hong Kong section was excellent and very useful for a 5 day trip, but a bit light on eating and drinking options. Hope the ones in this book are good!
