The story follows the life of John Aldcott from the age of eight; from his family's escape from China during the Boxer rebellion; their return to Britain and John's entry into public school and university. We see how his character and attitudes are shaped by his early experiences and how they affect his later life in the trenches of the First World War where he serves in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Just as importantly, we see the development of the inner man: his developing religious beliefs, his love for his wife and children, and his deep sense of duty. In the internment camp when material possessions are stripped away, when physical strength begins to fail, it is this inner strength that remains intact; this after all is the real substance of a man.
