Bought two of these, one still working OK, but the other failed after 6 months with a scrambled screen display and flashing lights. Good that it was still within the year's warranty, but, beware, Honeywell say you have to return it to the retailer, and the retailer - graham3085, refused to take it back because he said he only gives three month's warranty through Amazon, although there is nothing about that in his seller profile. Amazon themselves won't help because it is bought through Amazon marketplace. So, be careful who you deal with, and check that the full year's warranty will be honoured by the retailer.

This product was fine when it was working but in common with other reviewers on Amazon, ours suddenly stopped working properly. Our central heating suddenly wouldn't supply both hot water and heating at the same time. Our heating engineer who is Honeywell trained and is a fully certified gas safe engineer tried a new cylinder thermostat and a new motorised 3 port valve but neither of these corrected the fault. After taking off our bath panel in a search for a junction box which didn't exist he suddenly had an idea. He wired in an old British Gas programmer that he keeps in his van and hey presto our system instantly worked normally again. He said he had never known one of these Honeywell programmers to go wrong before. We now (rather stupidly? only time will tell) have a brand new one and are praying that this one lasts longer than the old one which ended up cost us £400.00 including two parts we didn't need and our plumber's labour. If you buy one, good luck but at least if your heating and hot water won't work together my review may save you a small fortune as you will be aware that you should ask your plumber to check this programmer first!

My unit malfunctioned after 2 years, we were disappointed, but contacted Honeywell and whilst on the phone to the technical service dept & looking at the unit, established the serial number. This confirmed it was part of a batch with a faulty component. Honeywell have replaced the faulty unit, we had to return the faulty unit to them. We had found the unit excellent before the malfunction, the new unit is now up and running perfectly, with a very easy replacement, just 2 screws then lift the unit out. Customer service was very good & the unit arrived very swiftly.

Looks pretty but only lasted 14 months before it stopped switching automatically. From day 1 it wasn't great - one of the squashy buttons jammed under the plastic case & got stuck 'on', and the clock would lose a few minutes a month (less accurate than a £3 watch you can buy at a your local garage!). Honeywell need to spend less time designing fancy LCD displays and try to get the basics right first. Won't be buying Honeywell again so now have a Drayton 722.

Had one of these fitted at my Grandmothers house under a government OAP warm front scheme... 16 months later, mid winter.. failed.

Original installers didn't want to know, neither did honey well! nor did the council.... As I'm a electronics engineer I decided to look into it myself.

Couldn't get water and heating at the same time - noted that when one was engaged on its own a relay click can be heard from the ST9400C unit its self. Try to switch both on, and the 2nd relay doesn't click and the screen dims.

Inside the unit **Dont try this at home - is the cheap and cheerful AtMega chip. Although these are used in kids toys, they are generally reliable.

Noted the lack of well designed power system - this is required to run the 3.3V to 5VDC micro controller from mains 240AC. the pair of 48V relays inside are fine, but again poor design on the 48VDC supply rail. Overall College students could design a better control unit from parts from Maplin... :oS On the plus side, you do get 2 backup batteries. Not that you'd ever be likely to replace either - as the unit wont last nearly as long as the battery....................

I had one of these fitted to a brand new hot water system. Worked perfectly for about 18 months, then suddenly I could not get heating and hot water at the same time. The controller would just not allow switching between the two even when both should be on. Whichever came on first, that was it (eg full tank of hot water but cold house when both should have been on). Just google 'Honeywell 9400c problems' and it seems to be a common problem. Great when it works but as other reviews show, can be costly to diagnose a fault as my one still looks like its working normally even though it is not.

Update - I changed it over to a Siemens RW29, now everything working fine. So problem definitely the Honeywell controller but as noted above, it had all the signs of working properly, even though it wasn't. Which is not a good feature...

I've had two of these programmers now. Both lasted about a year.
Honeywell used to be the top manufacturer for quality electronic control systems.
Theyre probably manufacturing these in Asia for pennies.
but theyre cack.

Had one of these fitted as part of a boiler replacement. Gave trouble from day one with intermittent hot water and no heating at all. Spent weeks (and money) chasing other faults around system with re-visits from Installer and Baxi (The boiler manufacturer).

Eventually decided controller was faulty, quick google of "Honeywell ST9400C Problems" revealed other people with the same issue.

Replaced with a Siemens controller (for half the price!) and Heat and Hot Water were restored!
