Biography

Biography by Jason Ankeny

Like the Velvet Underground, their most obvious influence, the chart success of the Jesus and Mary Chain was virtually nonexistent, but their artistic impact was incalculable; quite simply, the British group made the world safe for white noise, orchestrating a sound dense in squalling feedback which served as an inspiration to everyone from My Bloody Valentine ... Product Description

CD Description

* The Jesus And Mary Chain returned with a bang in 1992 with their critically acclaimed fourth album. They had spent time off since their last record building their own recording studio, The Drugstore, and soaking up some of the new sounds coming from cities such as Manchester and Seattle. The resulting single ‘Reverence’ was a top ten hit and a startling trailer for the album to come – marrying a hypnotic drum loop and propulsive percussion to sheet metal feedback and iconoclastic lyrics. By filtering their trademark combination of noise and melody through state-of-the-art production techniques, the Reid brothers reinvented themselves for a new decade. * This deluxe expanded edition features all the non-album b-sides, the pre-Honey's Dead Rollercoaster EP, a rarely heard alternate version of "Why'd You Want Me", a complete live set recorded by the BBC for a date on the Rollercoaster package tour the band organised and headlined in this period, remixes including the first CD issue of the brilliant Arc Weld mix of "Far Gone And Out", and radio interviews with Jim and William Reid, including a chat with Tommy Vance about their ill-fated appearance at the US Lollapalooza festival. * The 50-minute DVD features the promo videos for all the singles including the first time on DVD for the video for "Rollercoaster" and the previously unreleased and controversial video for "Teenage Lust". There are also previously unreleased archival TV appearances, including electrifying performances of "Reverence" on The Word, "Far Gone And Out" on the Late Show, "Teenage Lust" on 120 minutes and a 20-minute interview and video retrospective with Jim and William Reid discussing their career to date, interspersed with excerpts of all their videos from 1985 - 1992 and rare live footage of the band performing at Brixton Academy. * The 20 page booklet contains exclusive new interviews that tell the band’s story in their own words, including a contribution from acclaimed producer Alan Moulder (Foo Fighters/Depeche Mode/ Smashing Pumpkins) that provides a revealing insight into their working methods in the studio, alongside rare memorabilia and previously unpublished photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff 31 July 2002
By Alexander G. Marshall VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Outside of the absolute classics of 'Psychocandy' and 'Darklands' this is the JAMC's best album, the one final burst of glory before it all went pear-shaped. Its surprisingly melodic and psychedelic, but the love of 'music concrete' is still there-JAMC were one of the few 'pop' acts I know willing to interrupt songs mid-way with noises that sounded like bulldozers crashing into each other. Not the best band in the world, but definitely the best to ever come from East Kilbride..

4.0 out of 5 stars Gleaming indie noisepop at its best 15 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The Reid brothers enjoyed a mini-renaissance with this album in 1991, and their accompanying tour with Dinosaur Jnr, My Bloody Valentine and Blur. It contains two of their best singles in the top ten howl of outrage that was 'Reverence' (banned from Top of the Pops for the line 'I wanna die just like Jesus Christ' and the chorus, simply 'I wanna die'), and the perfect popnoise bomb 'Far Gone and Out' (a particular favourite of my friend Geg). Other highlights are the tender 'Almost Gold', the spiralling 'Rollercoater' and the closing, elegaic 'Sundown'. The production is impressive throughout, adding a slick industial sheen to the group's customary guitar pyrotechnics, and if the album is let down by anything it's the fact that some of the songs are less inspired than others. A great album nonetheless and well worth a listen.

The JAMC deliver an album with lashings of flavour, from the sweet lovelorn guitar pop of Almost Gold and Good For My Soul to the salty grime of songs like Catchfire. For me this is the Reid brothers best album. I was lucky enough to see these guys on their now legendry Rollercoaster Tour with Dinosaur Jr and the up-and-coming Blur in the early 90's. Today, I can't help thinking Damon and Graham must have taken notes!

Not every fan's favourite, but it's mine. I wasn't expecting much when I bought it (at Bradleys in Doncaster, fact fans), but it blew me away. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Mary Chain
A better album than the appalling Automatic, but overall, forgettable. They sound a bit like Blur on this album and only a couple of tracks are any good: Almost Gold, Rollercoaster... Read more
