Honeyblood are Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar a female duo from Glasgow

This band have come out of nowhere for me as someone who doesn't keep up with the latest music much. I only heard about them by chance and was blown away by the awesome single "Killer Bangs". It is a major pop anthem. And if you like that, you'll love this.

Apart from this standout track, here I can detect elements of 90's American college rock amongst the punchy punk beats and classy singer songwriter sensibilities. Talk about crunchy guitars!

They've put together an eclectic and diverse range of songs with one thing in common : all are awesome. We have the mesmerically smooth flowing "Biro" to the chirpy, countrified "Bud" and sweet, heady "Joey" all the way through to the in-your-face, almost bile-fuelled "All Dragged Up" and "Super Rat".

And I haven't even mentioned how good "Choker" and "Fall Forever" are! There are no fillers here. Just a gorgeously crafted range of songs with some very clever, thoughtful lyrics ("No Spare Key", "Biro" in particular) giving a hugely impressive debut album, and an album of the year no doubt. They may just be the saviours of what I call awesome music! It's a brilliant record on many levels and highly recommended!

Formed in 2012 and flying the flag for a pop-infected blend of garage rock, Glasgow-based duo Honeyblood comprise Shona McVicar on skins and Stina Tweeddale on 6-string and vocal duties. The pair, who cite such influences as PJ Harvey and The Throwing Muses, have been making waves recently and now return with their debut and eagerly anticipated self-titled album, Honeyblood. It's a nascent rock ‘n’ roll work, lyrically seeping with youthful angst and romantic detachment.

The women first sank their roots into the musical scene with a two-track cassette, Thrift Shop, which was recorded with a single mic in their bathroom. Needless to say, the sound quality wasn’t top notch. However in the wake of the hi-fi passion of their lo-fi recording, along with a clear talent and drive, they’ve quickly established a name for themselves on their local scene through relentless touring and an active online presence. You name the social media platform, they’re probably on it. These seeds promptly gave root to a couple of 7-inches, Bud and Killer Bangs, which saw the ensemble play a series of major UK festivals as well as frequenting a handful of low-key venues both up and down the country and across the Atlantic. All of that, without a single album to their name.

Honeyblood’s debut full-length kicks off with high energy track “Fall Forever”. Filled to the brim with melodic and gutsy hooks, the song boasts a vocal akin to Circa Survive, while retaining the minimalist attitude of fellow duet, The Kills. It’s an unfettered and grass roots number, the mix’s catchy beat beckoning you into their rock ‘n’ roll world. “Killer Bangs”, released as a single just a couple of months prior, alongside “Super Rat” and “Choker”, are all grunge-y, alt-pop works, rich with the underground animosity we’ve come to know and love from the Scots. A chorus of “Scumbag, sleaze, slime ball, grease, you really do disgust me” to the backing of Stina’s slow and sombre strumming should provide a key into Honeyblood’s take on the world of romance.

A band with many arrows in their quiver, we’re treated to a pop-punk, up-beat, roof down summer anthem in the form of “Biro”. Meanwhile “Joey”, which is based around Stina’s exacting riffing reminiscent of The Distillers’ “The Hunger”, is a heavier and discordant piece, with a hidden piano track closing the curtains on the just shy of 40 minute long work. This duo are definitely not a one trick act.

Honeyblood proves a solid effort from the Glaswegian act, negating anything extraneous to preserve that organic force their fans crave. And with so little material under their belt, as well as the last few dates of their tour’s US stretch ahead, before a host of UK dates follow in September, there’s still plenty of time to catch up with the newcomers.

A very decent debut with lots of influences from US and UK indie rock from the 80's to now. The artist it most reminds me of is Neko Case (mainly due to the vocals) although no country influence. It's one of those albums to play a few times, put away and listen to again a few months later and enjoy. Bud, their debut 45 from 2013 is a delight although the excellent B side is not on the album and so a worthwhile purchase in its own right. Well worth buying. They rock live too. Simon F

From the first few bars of blistering opening track 'Fall Forever' there's
a right royal ruckus going on and there are only two people making it :
guitarist/singer Stina (Marie Claire) Tweeddale and Drummer Shona
McVicar. Together they are Honeyblood and they demand that we sit
up straight and listen. This very talented Glaswegian duo have a lot
to say for themselves and they say it fast, loud and with conviction.

It might be a bit of a riot but it is clear that there is musical intelligence
at work here too. That first track might have the to power strip the paint
off ceilings but it is offset by a really cracking melody and a deft chorus.
So too 'Killer Bangs' which fuses a sixties girl-band vibe with a raucous
punkish spirit. There's droll humour too in the shape of songs such as
'Super Rat' (a bitter little pill if ever there was one!) and 'Choker' which
struts and staggers in menacingly fine style. I seem to have found a
favorite egg in the nest, however, in the shape of 'Bud', an invention
brimful of pathos and a touching sense of yearning and warm nostalgia.

Their name befits them well. Sweet as honey but sharp as a knife.
This debut is a little gem. A rough diamond with a big, big sparkle.

Highly Recommended.

While the limitations of their sound and song writing are clear there is something curiously likeable about this Scottish duo.

I first saw them supporting Courtney Barnett and made sure I checked them out. I really like the singers voice - and as I say there are clear limitations to the sound they make and type of songs they write - but what they do they do very well. I was quite surprised how much I have ended up listening to and liking this album

It's earnest, endearing and ultimately enjoyable - which is enough for me!

Superb album. Really like Biro and All Dragged Up. Not sure how long the two-piece thing will carry, but it works well here.

Great riffs, top notch drumming , good lyrics . Cool live vibe runs through the whole album . Cd arrived this morning and after 3 or 4 plays it has several stand out tracks . Stina's vocals give a thrill of Debbie Harry with a bit of Wendy James thrown in but with her own distinctive attitude coming through .These girls are heading for the big time .

It seems that the 6 Music/NME hype machine has gone well into overload with this one. Sure, 'Killer Bangs' is a pretty good single, and the b-side to 'Bud' was a great tune too, but there's nothing new here to really justify the praise that's being lavished upon this record from some quarters. It starts off promisingly enough - 'Fall Forever' is probably the highlight of the album, but it's never a good sign when the opening track is the best track, especially when there's so much filler towards the end of the second side. Over the years, the late, great John Peel played hundreds of bands that sounded just like this - kids knocking about in garages and recording it for jollies, and few people paid any attention, which was partly the point. There are some nice meoldies to be found herein, although the lyrics aren't up to much, and the whole thing comes off as being something of second-rate Best Coast. It's interesting that they cite P J Harvey and Throwing Muses as influences, as - the darkly claustrophobic 'No Spare Key' aside - there's little here reminsicent of either of those wonderful acts. There's an awful lot of stuff out there that sounds like this these days, so think long and hard before parting with your hard-earned.

Excellent band and cd. So glad I saw them when they were supporting Courtney Barnett in Leicester. Even chatted to them outside at the break. Highly recommended and will wait for their next cd and tour in anticipation. Great stuff girls!
