Amazon.co.uk Review

A deft balance between special effects, comedy and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbour kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended) and entertaining outing. --Keith Simanton

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite movies, 1 Jan 2003
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Wayne Szalinski is convinced he has figured out a way to shrink the size of matter. It works great on paper, but he can't make it work in real life. While he's at a conference presenting his ideas, the machine accidentally shrinks his and his neighbor's kids. When they get thrown out with the trash, they must journey across the backyard, avoiding bugs, sprinklers, and lawnmowers. Meanwhile, Wayne and his wife try to fix the machine and find the kids. Will they find them before it's too late? Can Wayne figure out how to make the machine work to reverse the process?

This is one of my favorite movies. It combines a great story and great characters with great special effects. All the characters grow because of their experiences, even both sets of parents. The special effects still hold up today, and are there to tell the story, not the other way around. The story moves effortlessly from comedy to drama and back again.

Unfortunately, Disney chose to release this gem on a less then steller DVD. The film is full frame, and there are no extras. They could have enclosed the trailer and special that aired here in the states for nothing, but chose not to for whatever reason.

It's a shame that there aren't more movies like this. Gather the entire family together and enjoy a great family film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheesy 80s America at its best., 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I must have seen this film ten times or more, each Boxing day, but i never tire of it. For me, the best thing about this film, is it captures every clique of 80s America; the cheerleader style girl in pink legwarmers dancing around with a mop to great classics of the 80s, the geeky younger brother in stereyotypical scientist clothes, the blond 'mom', the next door neighbour etc. It has everything a kid wants in a film, humour, special effects(although they do leave a lot to be desired)and most of all, it brings to life what everyone wanted to do when they were younger, have an adventure. The makers also try to provide the slightly older kids with the old romamce story between the goodlooking girl and the weedy but attractive nextdoor neighbour. That was my faveourite part because if i could go back in time it would be to 80s America to live those legwarmers, cheerleading and football quarterbacks so it brought my wish to life. Also their hunk of the film wasnt a Josh Brolin lookalike (although i wouldnt argue if he was) so that was quite refreashing. If you liked the Goonies ,Saved by the bell and other 80s American classics then i would definetly recommend this film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Disney classic., 2 Oct 2009
By M. P. OKeefe "martinphilipokeefe" (London, England.) - See all my reviews

This is a wonderful family film, comedy like it should be. Perfect for children and amusing enough for adults but without the humour that will go over childrens head unlike some family films and cartoons like The Simpsons. The special effects stand up fairly well even after twenty years and it remains really enjoyable.
