Book Description

4 July 2005
After being seriously injured in a hit and run, Piers Moore Ede went to work and recuperate on an organic farm in Italy. There he met a beekeeper, Gunter, who showed him, for the first time, the wonders and magic of the beehive. Battling depression and afraid to face the future, Piers finds a renewed sense of purpose through his work with the bees. Up close amongst the highly organised life of a hive, he realises that somehow honey might be the salve that can help him. Back in England Piers, still only in his mid twenties, decides upon a quest to seek the most wondrous honeys in the world. From the terracotta bee jars of the Lebanon to the clay cylinders of Syria, slowly his personal tribulations dwindle into perspective against the backdrop of the fast-shrinking traditions of the honey-farmers. Hunting wild honey from cliffs with Gurung tribesman in Nepal, and in vast jungle trees with Veddah tribesmen in Sri Lanka, Piers draws close to the very origins of life. But honey itself is the real luminary of Honey and Dust - honey, the wonderful invigorating golden manna that Virgil believed was of divine origin. Honey and Dust is about the world's oldest and purest food. But it also a personal quest of healing, an attempt to regain a sense of place in the world. Meditative, and keenly observant, it is a book about the joy of being alive, and of the regenerative powers of wild nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travels in Search of Sweetness 21 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
This is one of the few books that I actually decided to purchase, having read it first. Usually I borrow books from the library and am contented with that. It is a wonderful book about the author's travels to countries where he can view at first-hand what bee-keeping and the pursuit of honey is all about. His travels take him to meet bee keepers and honey farmers in exotic countries such as Nepal, India and Sri Lanka; the Middle East and Syria, and to Italy and New York. He describes the natural habitat of such places in a beautiful and picturesque way and at every step of his travels he takes the reader with him in his search for honey and sweetness. The story is not very long. One of the best I've read this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey in search of healing and honey. 23 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
At the start of the book Moore Ede has had a very bad accident in San Francisco: cycling down one of those hills, he was knocked off his push bike by a truck. Although he has physically recovered he finds that he has lost his emotional equilibrium.

Having always loved honey as a child he decides to go on a quest to find honey being produced by traditional methods. He finds clay pots in Syria, wild honey hunters who defy death to scale cliffs in Nepal and tribesmen in the jungles of Sri Lanka who hunt for honey in tree trunks. At the same time he is searching for his lost sense of well being.

This book is beautifully written, and is both funny and moving. I can't wait to read the next installment in Piers Moore Ede's adventures.
